The typhoon is great.
But why does it sound like a two stroke lawn mower from the outside?

C’mon!

It was a 24 cylinder beast putting out more than 2000 horsepower!

More grunt please.

Where you are in relation matters, if you're on the ground you can hear it coming and it's spooky!

"Grunt" comes from large displacement, fewer cylinder engines. High cylinder count engines don't grunt. They snarl, whine, buzz.

The Typhoon and Tempest sound pretty spot on imo - they apparently sounded like ridiculously loud "sewing machines".

It's a bit of a guess right now what the Napier Sabre sounds like, since the available audio recordings aren't great. Hopefully that'll change once the Typhoons being restored have running engines.

That's how it was, though. As mentioned, not many recordings of the real thing around, but the ones that exist indicate it was a buzzer rather than a roarer:
