Voyager Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 So, basically, my VR setup just isn't working very well, and I'm trying to figure out what, if there is anything I can do right now, to get it all working together better. My relevant stats are IPD of 71mm, ~-9/-6 diopters correction in each eye (severe nearsightedness and severe astigmatism, so corrective lenses are as requirement) and a 24"/62cm head. Desktop is a Ryzen 5800, with 32GB DDR4 3600 CL16, and a Geforce GTX 1080 TI My current headset is an HP Reverb G1, which was a replacement for the Oculus Rift CV1. I've been using it with a separate headset, and PointCTRL ( a headset mounted finger tracker) for other flight sims. At the settings I want to run (Ultra, distant buildings, unlimited terrain view) I'm getting around 40fps minimums. I'm ok with that, though I'll want to replace the GPU once cards are available again. The problems I'm running into are with the headset and its setup. The Reverb G1 does not match my IPD, and I definitely can feel it. I've been able to set up Steam VR so it can force the IPD to 71mm, but that only works in games running through Steam. I'm also unhappy with the VR controllers, the cable management and WMR in general. The resolution was a big step up from the Rift CV1, but it feels like everything else was several steps backwards. I'm thinking the IPD issue and the cables problem are the big ones, I need to understand if I can solve, without giving up resolution or clarity. Good controllers for other VR games would be nice, but not essential. I just feel like my IPD locks me out of a lot of the next generation hardware, except the PiMax, which I'm given to understand has QC issues and does not like glasses. The Index is interesting, but I didn't want to go backwards in resolution, especially when the next gen GPUs are slowly percolating out. The Vive Pro 2 is interesting, but pricy. The DecaGear One looked interesting, just because its 4k with 71mm IPD, but it keeps getting delayed, and may or may not actually launch. What are people's thoughts? It seems like there are starting to be a few more options for high IPDs, but it still feels pretty limited. Is something like the Vive Pro 2 going to be worth the upgrade? Or wait it out for a while longer and see what else comes up? Eventually, I'd like to get to a 180 degree FoV systems, but, I'm thinking that we're at least two more GPU generations out before that's practical. Thank you, Harry Voyager
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 With 71mm IPD, once it's fixed, the Vive Pro 2 is by far the best choice for you. It offers up to 70.5mm IPD. The G2 does not go beyond 68mm and its sweetspot is not forgiving enough to accomodate you.
Voyager Posted June 10, 2021 Author Posted June 10, 2021 That's sort of what I'm leaning to. Though I'm also wondering if it would be worth it to shift to the Index. It loses some resolution, but it sounds like everything else on it just works. Were there any plans for an Index 2 in the works?
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 Don't think so. There's loads of bubble here and there but it's all just clickbait imo. VP2 is a straight upgrade from Index. People just have the general fitting and accomodation issues they've had with every headset so far, last time with the G2. People were very negative at the start but it's excellent. Then you got guys who put it on the head, don't get the correct fit within 2 minutes - and go "I'm sending that shiat back bro". Can't fix stupid, there's a set amount of guys who just take a headset and expect it to fit them without modifying it. No headset can do that, neither this nor the Index. The range of different facial shapes makes that expectation ridiculous to begin with...
Voyager Posted June 10, 2021 Author Posted June 10, 2021 Ok, I'll start budget negotiations with the family FSO. The hilarious irony, is I just realized, I may actually need to keep the Reverb G1 anyways. I've been kicking around game idea. One of them might actually work in VR. And If I do that, I'll need to make the control scheme work for the least common denominator. Which, I think, for VR, isn't hose horrible WMR wands...

HP did a pretty good job with the new controllers for the Reverb G2. Not up to Oculus Touch or Index Knuckles but certainly closer.
