machtu Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 Is there a key key combination available for a acetylene torch to cut out the head armor in the tempest? Beautiful open canopy ruined by the massive rear view blocker head armor.
Lord_Strange Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 Since there are modifications for removing cockpit armour from other planes (mostly German ones iirc), I would assume it didn't happen very often in RAF fighters or not at all. If the lack of brightly-painted RAF skins is anything to go by, then the RAF were stricter about field modifications to aircraft than other air forces. 1
Hitcher Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 Think pilots prefered not getting shot in the back of the head by 20mm shells. 2
Diggun Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 The default head position has your head right hard back against that plate. If you 'lean forward' in the cockpit, and save the view with f10, the armour becomes much more manageable. 1

I've always disliked the rear view from the Tempest, compared to other bubble tops like the P-47 and P-51. Now, however, having the Typhoon to compare it to, the Tempest seems like it has a problem in the view orientation. Maybe people who don't still rely on keybound views (I still do, 'cuz I'm retro) don't notice. Here's some side-by-sides: Typhoon, rear left view: Typhoon, straight rear view: Typhoon head armor from external view: Tempest head armor from external view: Tempest rear left view: Tempest straight rear view: It looks like the Tempest's armor takes up an excessive amount of your view compared to the Typhoon's, for no reason I can discern. Note that I used the same key bindings to get all the views. Edited June 6, 2021 by oc2209 1 1
machtu Posted June 7, 2021 Author Posted June 7, 2021 It really does mess up the rear view. The armor piece seems to be huge in size, but probably is needed for the swelled ego heads I come across all the time.
Soilworker Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 As Diggun said, move your default head position. The Typhoon and Tempest should have the same size plate I believe. You can also modify and save snap views, I used to do it in RoF when using TrackIR for aiming down the gun sights because I found TIR too sensitive. 1

I tried this with just basic key commands, and the view is still inferior to the Typhoon's. The ideal solution will be for the devs to make the views identical in both planes. 1
