cardboard_killer Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 Pray for me. My cat finally figured out it was easier to go through the front door to the back door to get to the patio instead of simply walking around the house. So now I'm even more a doorman than before. 1 4
Wardog5711 Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 This guy is not really a pet, but he would be if they only lasted longer than 2-3 years. Their lifespan is short. We live next to a wooded area and I have a number of Opossums and Raccoons that show up in the yard to eat from the communal bowls. They all get along with the neighborhood cats, but this one is unusual in that he normally shows up during the daylight hours and he is not afraid of me or my dog Kelli. He will even come up on the porch to eat from a bowl of cat food while we stand at the door and watch. 4 1 1 1

We have them all over our town. When trapping feral cats to be spayed/neutered I've instead trapped both 'possums and raccoons. 1

BornToBattle Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 I’m posting this as a token memorial actually. Don’t know why really. Maybe because we’re all animal lovers and I figure someone can relate. I have not posted anything over on the Plastic Modeler's forum for several months now and this is part of the reason why. When we moved into our current home there was the four of us - my wife and myself along with our two Saint Bernard’s Heidi and Remington. Heidi we obtained first, then Remington a little over a year later. Heidi and Remi took to each other like peas and carrots and thereafter as years passed they were inseparable. Remington was Heidi’s shadow…and both were ours. They were family. We lost our beloved Miss Heidi on Christmas Day two years ago. She died from cardiac arrest from bloat about five minutes after arriving at the local ER vet location. She made it to 10 years and 8 days. Remington would literally search the house for her for days. Two weeks ago Monday we rather unexpectedly had to say our final goodbyes to our Remington too. Unknown to us at the time he was actually going through the course of dying. We elected, very painfully, to euthanize him. Due to age, his gastrointestinal system was shutting down hence the refusal of food for three days straight, an awkward breathing pattern coupled with the onset of lethargy and interest in certain things spelled inevitable end for him. I never realized how fast the onset of end of life occurred for dogs as this was my first experience with it never mind the fact that domestic dogs can only go an average of 5 days without eating before death occurs even while still in taking water.. We were both shocked. Remington was with us 10 years, 8 months and 18 days. Statically, only 25% of Saints only make it to 10 years. It seems so unfair. So how does this relate to building models? Every single time I would go downstairs to work on the bench within a minute I would hear the lumbering of his 200 pound frame coming down the steps to lay next to my chair. He always had his one favorite spot and he’d stay right there until evening fell and we travelled outside to make our way around to the front door as his arthritis prevented him from going up the steps. I don’t want to sound like a baby, but psychologically it’s just tough for me to go down there anymore and do what I once loved. It just isn’t the same anymore. Perhaps in time this may change but for now I don’t see it. I guess I’m summary love your fur family, or whatever critters you hold near and dear. Species doesn’t matter - it’s the depth of commitment and the attachment you held which will determines your level of grief. Our pets, unlike some human counterparts in our lives, are totally dependent on us for their care and yet they give back ten fold. They’re around us more or less 24/7. We build our runtimes around them. They don’t argue, they don’t judge. They're happy to see you whether you’re in a good mood or bad. They express their attachment in very simplistic ways that’s unconditional unlike the complexities of human nature. Don’t ever take them for granted. We’ve been entrusted to care for them while they’re here. Sorry this was long winded. My apologies to the forum. Sometimes life can really suck. 1 4 3

I seem to have a four year interval before I give in and accept a new pet into my heart and life (I've said "never again" twice now). I try to remember that their well being and happiness today, is what will ease my pain when they are gone. When my current cat wants my time, I give it to him, everything else goes on hold. I don't want any regrets when he's gone. I still dream about my first cat, usually happy dreams re-living the nights we chased each other around the neighborhood when I was a young adult and struggling with things.
