Toffe Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Why does the FoV feel so low? Can it be increased somehow? It's actually gotten to the point where my neck hurts (very immersive). I don't want any snap views, just increase the FoV. (I'm using the Quest 2) Maybe it's the technical limitations of this VR headset? but then why didn't I have this feeling in War Thunder? It doesn't make sense, it have to be something about this game as this is the first time I've felt so restricted using VR. Just writing this had me thinking about VR vs TrackIR. How do you compete with that? They're able to snap their head 180 instantly? Why have no attempts been made to balance that? Because the first thing I were met with in this game was an attempt to balance me as an VR user, with the whole floating cockpit thingy (meaning devs actually care about balance and fair play).

Rotate your torso more, perhaps having a swivel chair (if you aren't using pedals) helps a bit. 16 minutes ago, Decoy_Raven said: Just writing this had me thinking about VR vs TrackIR. They are able to snap 180 instantly, yes (even without TrackIR you can do that with keybinds). Because it's a zero-sum game - the status quo is insta-turn either by keyboard or headtracking, and that's the majority of the playerbase - changing that is a recipe for pitchforks-and-torches. The only thing from the developer that can be done is to integrate a system similar to VRNeckSafer in the game (effectively allow snap camera turn for VR on keypress). Currently you can either use VRNeckSafer or do some stretching exercises before and after you play - the former has the benefit of a brilliant autorotation system which can give you those extra few degrees for comfort without breaking immersion terribly, the latter will make you a bit more conscious of ergonomics plus you'll look quite bad-ass cracking your neck before getting in the cockpit in your mind's eye. 1
Toffe Posted June 3, 2021 Author Posted June 3, 2021 So it can't be increased then? Stuck with a twist stick for now, but I've been thinking about getting pedals. Not sure if it's worth it. Maybe I can use my G29 pedals haha. Yeah, true. Guess I'll just have to man up, don't want to ruin it for the majority. Choosing VR is immersion over being competitive anyway so. We'll see how my neck fares. Either I end up with a neck as thick as my torso or I'll come back here crying looking for the necksafer I guess.

But I do single player only. Been flying in VR since Jan 2017 so guess I just got used to it where it does not really bother me. More however is always welcome. I want better image first, better fov second. I have no desire to use any mod to increase amount of head travel, I like my true 1:1 tracking. Edited June 3, 2021 by dburne 1

Only singleplayer for me so far as well but I really want to get into MP as soon as possible as I feel the AI isn't pushing me hard enough. I mostly fly the Yak-1b or Spitfire 5 against a 109 G-6 (Ace). I've noticed they often start to turn fight which gives me an advantage as both the Yak and Spitfire are great turnfighters. Anyway, I'll try rotating with my torso more than just snapping my head around like a sparrow. When I got sore in the neck yesterday I noticed I starting using sound and thinking a bit more on where to look instead of looking everywhere as well. Will probably get better with time as you said. Yeah, I also want it to be 1:1. I rather not rely on any "fixes" or tools.

Don't forget some of those planes have mirrors - some you have to select it as an option to use in the plane before starting the mission, like in the Spit. Edited June 3, 2021 by dburne

It definitely can be a workout. My setup is such that my modified office chair can swivel a few degrees, and I can grab the arm rests when I turn to get leverage. Makes it much easier, especially since the wheels on my chair can lock. And it's not unrealistic: (He can't swivel obviously, but you can see they grab handles and such for twisting in the cockpit) Edited June 3, 2021 by unlikely_spider 1

Yeah that's true but I've never taken them as I heard it affects performance badly. VR is extremely demanding as it is already, not sure I have the headroom for mirrors. Maybe it's because I just play duels against the AI back to back. Normally you're not in intense dogfights that often. But I'm new to the game so I wanted to get a feel for the dogfighting and trying out various planes. I should practice navigation the most though but it's so damn boring. Maybe I'll do that when my neck is done from dogfighting.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Why has nobody mentioned VRnecksaver yet? Of course you can snapview backwards as well in VR...
Charlo-VR Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 (edited) ^^^ This ^^^, which is found at My chair is bolted to a motion platform so won’t swivel at all - I’m pretty much strapped in to a bucket seat that won’t even let me turn my shoulders much. The immersion is worth it, though, and I have a lot of fun in MP. FOV limits are built into each VR headset, but I just feel as if I am wearing goggles in my cockpit anyway Edited June 3, 2021 by Charlo-VR 1

To do this on a Q2 hold down the right controller's Oculus button and left trigger, while rubbing your left thumb across your left index and middle finger. I'm very much aware (like most people) Q2 isn't the hottest shit around. Gonna try DCS as well see how that feels regarding FOV. Not sure why it felt so easy tracking in WT.. Anyway, I'll figure it out. This have been the best experience for me in VR so far so I'm keen on getting it as good as possible.
BeastyBaiter Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 No way around it, you just have to move around more. I have pedals and a swivel chair, it doesn't pose a problem for me. I'm using the Reverb G2 which also has a somewhat tight FoV. More FoV would be better, but we can barely run these things as is with current GPU's so I'll take a higher resolution tighter FoV over lower resolution wider FoV until hardware catches up. 1

Sorry mate, I didn´t want to be rude with you, but put on the table that Q2 could be good on price but less optimun in other areas. My personal experience with the Index is using a fixed chair, no snapviews, no extra software to check six, just trying to be more elastic and have some ugly surprises from my six. But I only play SP. In MP I don´t know what I would do. 1
