In November 1942, Tonne led 3./JG 53 to North Africa. He gained his first victory in this theatre on 26 December 1942 shooting down a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) P-38 Lightning twin-engine fighter. He specialised in shooting down Supermarine Spitfire fighters claiming ten of the type in a short time. Tonne flew 82 combat missions and claimed 21 victories over Tunisia. Wolfgang Tonne was killed in a flying accident caused in the attempt to celebrate his 122nd victory over the airfield at Protville, Tunisia on 20 April 1943.

After flying low over his airfield, waggling his wings to signify his last two victories, both Spitfire MkIX's, Tonne then prepared to land in his own unique fashion - pulling up, executing a turn when extending his undercarriage, and then side-slipping away the excess height until he touched down. This time however, Tonne misjudged and crashed his aircraft at the edge of the airfield, his machine instantly bursting into flames.

Wolfgang Tonne was credited with 122 victories in 641 missions. He scored 26 victories over the Western Front, including 16 Supermarine Spitfire. 10 of his 96 victories claimed over the Eastern Front were Il-2 Sturmoviks.

As usual the il2 hangar shot is the final version of the skin as I continued to make changes while looking at screenshots. The engine air scoops are not in blue because I wanted them to stand out more. I came across 4 different Work Numbers for this aircraft. They can't all be correct - maybe none of them are. There is even confusion of whether it was a G4 or a G6. I made the skin for the G4 but the split in opinion was about 50/50.

Awesome. Great screenshots also. My son had this aircraft,...obviously the G2 part is wrong it is a g4, as a model.

I read somewhere that the JG53 is held in high regard for on the road on to Stalingrad.

In my search for the above I found this aircraft?

Very very cool skin!

I think you are right about the G4 instead of the G6 judging the upper picture.

I found another interesting skin. This time a Bf109G14. I hope you all like it................

Nice work Flowbee !   Your weathering metal pieces are great.

( although green parts should be darker - at .dds game file... as it was at Tunisia/Sicily Gustavs... )

A G4 for sure. Picture taken at Bizerte in February 1943. Tonne achieved his 111th victory on this aircraft on 25 February 43. A close-up shot of the starboard side of tail-rudder,while mechanic is adding the  14th bar on the rudder , shows no W.Nr.

But the antenna lead just in front of the tail makes it a G-4. (This and the beule on the wings for larger tires made the external difference between the G-2 and G-4 mark.)

The first G-6 aircraft were deliverd to mediteranean JG from Februar 43.The first recorded loss of a G-6 occured on March 43  (5.JG53). A G-6 from II.JG51 was captured by U.S. troops in Tunisia on April 43. So Tonne could have been flying a G-6 model when he fatally crashed.

Another picture of a G-4 machine from 1JG53 taken at Protville airfield on 16th of April 1943 shows that ,at the time, I.JG53 was still flying the G-4 model.

Madcop. ?
