Using baby steps, and info gleaned from the forums, I have this flight of 3 HE-111s that attack static A-20s. The bombers make a successful drop and then get sent home. I also tested it by using a P-51 to shoot down the lead bomber and the two remaining make their drops and return home. Given that the AI has a mind of it's own, does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on what to look out for with regards to the bombers being damaged or destroyed? I've seen mentioned in the forums the use of force complete in some instances, not sure if one would be needed here.

Once the bombers have an Attack Area they normally will continue attacking the area as along as the get an order to stop it.

The Force Complete MCU will cancel the Attack Area command. It is generally activated by the BingoBombs event which means that all bombs have been dropped. If it is a flight then the leader drops the bombs, the wingman follow suit and then the Force Complete is adressed ontly to the Leader for the whole flight.

After that the Attack Area command has been cancelled the bombers will do whatever new command comes in and in general it will be a new waypoint for the way home.

The Attack Area has also a time duration parameter. This means that they will stop attacking after a certain delay, but they will stay and fly on the area.

The only thing that I do not know about the AI is if when the bomb load has been dropped does this generate an automatic cancellation, in which case your logic is fine. But this may work only for pure bombing. It will not work for rocket attacks and strafing. In that case you need to decide when to stop the attack and then use a Force Complete on the base of either a Timer or either an event from the leader or each plane in combination as you do in you logic above.

You have various possibilities and they work up to a point. If your flight is a mix of plane types then you may have strange behaviors,

Thanks for the input Icky! I'll keep your advice in mind, just trying to get a grasp of AI bombing flights.
