Slightly confused? Aircraft in careers/campaign...

During your campaign, I'm not sure how this works exactly...

How does one obtain plane B?

Is it through having to 'buy' that plane to enable you to play it?

Or is it 'unlocked' in some way? (I'm sure Luftwaffe and Soviet pilots didn't unlock their aircraft, after certain missions, lol!)
