Detoriation when importing psd file to Gimp

When I import some official templates to Gimp the weathering layer group becomes really dominant and makes the final skin look terrible.

Currently I try to fix it by fiddling with opacity of each weathering layer which is tedious work as a unique opacity value for the entire group would also make the metal chipping semi-transparent and my impression is that anyhow an individual opacity level is better.

Is there a tweak of another import approach that you could recomment me to avoid this issue?

I prefer working on skins in Photoshop and have had similar problems. My work-around is to complete my skin then flatten the the layers in Photoshop, save, then open the saved image in Gimp and convert to an .xcf file before exporting as a .dds. Long-winded but it works for me.

Don't play with the opacity, play with the blending options. There are some blending options that don't translate from PS to Gimp so you have to manually set or reset them. Blending options are found just above the opacity bar, where it says 'Normal'.

Also be sure to click 'Convert' when you get the prompt when opening a psd file for the first time.

In all honesty there is nothing Gimp can't do over PS when it comes to making skins for this sim.
