Best monitor for immersion/spotting.

Hello all,

I currently have a 27 inch 1440p Gsync monitor which I like, a lot.  However, I would like to get a larger screen monitor especially for IL-2.  Of course I've been drooling over the ultra wide and 4k 55 inch plus televisions but I cannot have anything that large as I will be at a location with limited space.  I will be able to accommodate at the largest 32 inch regular aspect ratio monitor or a 34 inch ultra wide.  I will be going with a 1440 resolution.  I've been on youtube and Googled "best ultra wide monitors", "best monitors for flight sims" etc.  I have a few on my radar, but wanted you guys experience specifically for IL-2.  Would you suggest a regular 32 inch aspect ratio screen or go 34 ultra wide?  Being able to spot is important to me as well.  I have a RTX 3070 rig that I will be running it with, FYI.

I have also researched VR, but feel like it might get tiresome.  Input on this is welcome.  Thanks in advance!

VR never gets tiresome. Any more than breathing gets monotonous.

I lowered my first VR headset over my face in Jan 2017.

Have not played any game on the monitor since.

It has however, caused me to spend a lot of money during that time lol.

Little different story here :)

I think VR is awesome but is not for me. I tried Odyssey plus and most recently HP G2. The G2 is awesome.  I am 100% on monitor at this time. Due to several factors including heat, general discomfort, nausea, etc.,   I choose 2D...  The eye candy on my current 4K is just incredible.  Spotting, although not perfect, is very very good.

I know this does not help you very much as you are looking for a smaller monitor. Still, I probably would stick with regular aspect ratio. Ideally G-sync.  The spotting/small dots with 4K small monitor might be a little tough..

I would have to say mine:

Samsung C49RG90 49" Dual QHD 120Hz HDMI VGA DP FreeSync HDR Curved QLED Gaming Monitor

I use to use a 55" but since you have to sit far way from it for your eyes to focus, you end up looking the benefit of size.

I'm very happy with my Acer Predator:

I also have HP G2 and find distant spotting good but have difficulty IDing what type plane until pretty close. This in comparison to the monitor where I can ID much further away.

I would have to disagree on this, I had this monitor (if this is the 1440p version) for about a week, it was cool but the blacks were so dreadful, the backlight bled through so much that blacks were silvery and often appeared lighter than surrounding darks. Some black areas looked worse from different angles as well which, seeing as it's a curved monitor was really an issue. This was all exacerbated by being in a dark room. I really wanted to like it and tried so many things to fix/compensate for the issue but in the end I returned it.

I should mention I never used it with IL-2 though, VR is the only way to go with that.

If you have the computing power, not going VR is a disservice IMHO. You may get VR motion sickness for a bit, but once you get you “VR-legs”, you wouldn’t want to go 2D again.

I used to use a 34" 1440 superwide, but found the extra width redundant with TIR, have now settled on a 32" 1440p in my pit for when I haven't got my Index "googles" on  :)

Probs worth mentioning I also use a 32" 1080p for my work PC that has RoF installed and a sidewinder attached.

Because I'm a little older and have not got the best eyes anymore, I hardly notice the difference between the 1440p and the 1080p. But do know spotting is easier on the 1080p because of the pixel density

I have an   iiyama G-Master 34" UltraWide Quad HD 144Hz IPS 1ms Gaming Monitor with an AMD RX 6800

I am happy with how the game looks but do struggle seeing some distant planes that team mates seem to see well before I do.

They are also running 1440p with similar settings.

I know it could be related to my age/eyes but have done some tests and things do seem to pop up earlier on their screens and think this maybe related to Ultra wide 1440p.

Can anyone recommend any in game settings that can improve settings on a  Ultra Wide 1440P monitor?

That is why I went back to 32"

Had the same things, squad mates seeing things before me etc.

Think mostly down to my age and eyes.

My temporary fix was to reduce the game res to below native and run at 2560x1080
