Graphics settings - CPU vs GPU affecting

Hey everybody,

I looked around for a list of which graphics settings affect either the CPU or the GPU or both. I haven't found one. Is there such a list out there? I vaguely remember a list that showed this but have not been able to find it as it was some time ago.

Thanks

Hi,

in my testing settings can only improve GPU performance.

I remember seeing the list as well. I would look for it in the Hardware section of the forum. However, I think it was all done prior to the shift in the graphics engine to deferred rendering, which shifted the load from the CPU to the GPU in a number of cases.

I will say that most of the settings you can change in the Graphics settings are going to primarily affect the GPU. The CPU gets hit hard by AI, mission logic, and flight and damage modeling. Of course, if you are in VR then the CPU/GPU breakdown is I think very different.

I don't know of any such thread, but as a reference point I recently upgraded my CPU (and only the CPU) and got a -massive- boost in performance in IL2, so while recent developments may have shifted some things around, my estimation is that IL2 is still a pretty CPU heavy game.

Same here. Ryzen 1700x to a 3800x while maintaining my 1080ti. Major improvement in frame rate when there is lots going on.

Yes, Il-2 (and flight sims generally) are pretty CPU heavy compared to most games. Doubly so in VR.

The only settings you can change in the game that will have a big effect on CPU rather than GPU is probably any mission density settings in the Career mode and how many planes you fly with/against in QMB. There's no way on the user end to reduce the CPU load from DM, FM, AI, and mission logic.

@US213_Picard, there is SYN_Vander's benchmarking thread where users run a set mission with consistent settings and compare their PC hardware and performance to other builds. I think that benchmark may help you find out if you are constrained by your CPU or memory, or your GPU. If you run it and post your results in that thread you might be able to identify the 'weakest link' in your hardware and target upgrades appropriately. Thread is here: SYN_Vander BENCHMARK v6 to measure IL-2 performance in monitor & VR - Hardware, Software and Controllers - IL-2 Sturmovik Forum (il2sturmovik.com)

Yep, I ran that while testing my rig for VR. I will run it again after my CPU and mobo upgrade. Hoping for some nice numbers.

The game slows down near the front in BOK especially. Too many ground objects, too much AI. I thought it was my former pc but it still happens with my new one. The framerate doesnt drop but you can clearly feel its slower.

It will happen even with a kickass CPU obviously. Imagine a huge formation of B-17. The game cant handle it.

Does the DENSE setting only affect the amount of ground units or also aircrafts?

Objects are CPU heavy. Had in MP some FPS drops near the ground, this is gone after an upgrade.
