Some tips for making shiny metal skins?

Gimp user here.

 

What are your recommendation in terms of color to use to obtain a credible metal skin? Would this color need to change depending on the skin template respectively plane and its skin template (official)?

 

Would you recommend to make it more shiny than for ordinary colour schemes and how can I achieve this?
