comparing with "great battles"

Yes different games, different game mechanics and flight models. But how well do you feel the two series compare in terms of handling in a dog fight?

Ive had bad luck in dueling ww2 versus ww2 aircraft in great battles, but in dover, its not that bad.  First dogfight i did i managed to kill a 109e4 with my spitfire 2, then alot of good luck taking out at least one 109 per mission using various things like tomowawk, kitty hawk, etc.  But oddly the 109 isnt as good a killer as i had hoped.

What are you thoughts guys?

NB Offline only for me - I have about 23 victories only 1/3 way through a Spit Campaign in great battles. In Clod (without re-flying) I am lucky to get one victory every 2 missions. Possibly its the ballistics - I find you really have to nail convergence and lead in Clod when in BOS it somehow seems easier to get that first hit. It may be my imagination. Also I do like the fact that in Clod one burst can take a bomber down and next time you use all you ammo and it keeps on flying.

All in all, I enjoy them both but feel that in terms of "realism" Clod nails it as long as the quirks are avoided in mission building. One thing that is mildly irritating in Clod (for me) is that 110s and Stukas seem to be the hardest aircraft to shoot down as the rear gunners are deadly even in high G manoeuvres.

PS I find 109 is twitchy and frisky so not a stable Gun platform - Boom and zoom with the Cannon seems to be best way  - turning creates lots of buffeting and getting shots on target is difficult

figuring out the lead in CLOD is tricky for me, waste alot of ammunition but its still fun.  My british planes at full fuel load outdo a spitfire Vb at 50% fuel in turns.

Emberrassing that in CLOD i am actually able to dogfight a 109 E2 like im in a Dora versus a B25d

One of the main differences between BoS and CloD, in my opinion, is precisely in aiming and shooting. I feel much better in CloD for the simple fact that I've played it a lot more. But I think it is easier to shoot in BoS: here the bullet seems much bigger than it should be (as if it is 1 X 1 meter) and the aircraft hitboxes are quite embarrassing, as is the graphical view of the damage. I also find it rather annoying that it is not possible set the vertical convergence, which in my opinion is a fundamental point for shooting.

In CloD, the stuff about convergence are very important and you should spend some time trying out different configurations.
Same goes for the ammunition belt: it is really essential to use only effective ammunition.

As for the 109, it is an excellent plane, especially because of its firepower and climbing ability. It is also good in scissors (useful in defensive).

I've never played in single player, but from what little I've seen CloD AI's are pretty dumb, BoS's are a little better. But I think that if one can, it is always better to play online.
CloD needs players...so join it :-)

BoS has a more restricted head movement and I feel like the max FOV is also lower which makes it harder to keep track of bandits during dogfights. BoS hit visuals are a bit over the top. Guns seems laser accurate and recoil is almost non existent while in 1946 or CloD if you fire large caliber gun you feel it.

there are differences,

still havent had the time to configure the game to let me get a dead on look of the 109's gunsights.   Winging it using the top left corner as "center" only works at short ranges.

CLOD doesnt like the default settings for my hat switch, BOS simply uses my thumb hat switch on my thrustmaster hotas throttle for looking around. ROF uses the hat switch on the joystick itself.

Recoil, BOS does have recoil, and recoil effects on the plane. SO far i just have to just hold the happy switch down and let enough slugs go down range to lift the planes nose up from recoil.

The AI in CLOD is not that bad, it does kill me alot.  Although i find it more realistic in what the enemy planes do. Wingmen are far far more reliable then in BOS.

I already gave you the answer, please go back to the first time you asked that question, click here, it's over there.

Do you use JoyToKey? It's an ideal solution for hat-switch users like you. Otherwise, the best advice one can give you is: spend your money and purchase one TrackIR, as long as Cliffs of Dover is not VR compatible, TrackIR is the best view system in this game.

I'm afraid it's the opposite, guns' recoil is modelled and clearly visible in Cliffs of Dover. I think it's not in Great Battles. Simply go to external view and shoot your autocannons: in "Cliffs of Dover" the 109 moves backwards, in "Great Battles" the 109 remains completely still.

Yes, true.

in BOS  i can get recoil effects, it just lifts the planes nose and lifts the line of bullet impact up. most noticable at longer ranges. But a heavy hand on the triggers doesnt help with accuracy..

Spent some time playing with the left shift + F1 key combination, it does work decently but doesnt give the same perspective as num pad 5 does in BOS

The AI gunners in bombers are alot more realistic, and not exactly the smartest in the bunch.  Was playing aginst some Walrus's last night, flying inbetween them, and one gunner in a Walrus actually shot the other Walrus down for me after I had put some decent ammo in it.

Hey, if you are using the Thrustmaster T1600M hotas, you can use joystick gremlin (free) to easily map that mini-stick on the throttle to mouse view (works absolutely fantastic!) -- but then again, I am not using the clickable pits, so it works out just fine for me ?
