Just a heads-up on a phenomenon I encountered the other day.

Windows wouldn't update to the latest KB and no matter what tricks I applied I couldn't get it to bite.

By a happenstance a fellow flyer in the Swedish community MaterArms pointed me in the right direction by mentioning WMR as culprit.

That was correct, uninstalling WMR and rebooting allowed windows to update correctly and as a bonus when reinstalling WMR I noticed a new function in the settings for mixed reality (timeout for sleep-mode) that wasn't there before.

It seems WMR hadn't updated correctly either.

This might be a coincidence but I thought posting here might alleviate some headache for fellow pilots :)

That happened to me back in Dec.

Someone on the Windows 10 forums pointed me to that, uninstalled WMR and it updated just fine.

Subsequent updates so far has not happened again.

Oh man, this is the first time I hear of this being the culprit. I wasted so much time on that in the past, used an inplace upgrade, which then would not allow chipset driver installation by AMD, I basically reinstalled Windows twice due to that... ?

Thanks for letting us now.

Bump and +1 on this tip. I didn't even realize I was behind on Windows updates, but the OP's recommendation worked for me, too

I’m rolling back this driver, because as once I finally did went through the WMR introduction, ( I need to point at diamond shape objects) the game did not start in VR. On the screen I noticed the two IL2 start screen but noting happened in my VR screen.

There's a quick way to fix this: open a command tool/windows powershell/whatever it's called (don't you hate M$ marketing something other OSes have had since the year dot?) as Admin. Then type (exactly, so cut-and-paste it):

dism /online /remove-capability /capabilityname:Analog.Holographic.Desktop~~~~0.0.1.0

then do your update without the headset connected (so it doesn't reinstall WMR). Then reconnect the headset and install WMR again.

Will try this method and hopefully it will skip the VR introduction route and make IL2 available again in my VR headset.

Waiting to hear if this works before trying to remove WMR and getting my updates.

Any update on this guys?

I’ve been lazy and did not do the uninstall/reinstall cycle because I’ve read a couple comments on windows forums that pretty much every subsequent update after 1391 required the same uninstall/reinstall cycle. Did you guys have to do it for following updates?

I didn't need to do it with either 20H2 or 21H1. But I did it earlier.
But I can't say if You can install the later updates without the earlier so it could be a catch 22 :)

Yeah the earlier update is gone. I had to format c: to get past it.

IIRC there was an earlier Windows 10 update that I had to uninstall WMR to successfully install it.

Since then there have been no problems for me. Am on the latest 21H1 now.

Thanks guys. I guess I may have to go that route…

This afternoon I uninstalled WMR and had no problem installing the updates. I may have missed the one from April  (can’t remember the exact number), but all the others updates installed without a problem.

reinstalled WMR and flew a short mission. I guess time will tell if I have to uninstall/reinstall when the next update hits.

If you are now on 21H1 I think you will be ok.

Yeah that's correct. I went format c: months before it got publicly known that a WMR update was responsible for it, so as the German saying goes "shot sparrows with cannons" :hunter:

After I updated the last time windows installed another update with WMR installed (21H1, KB5004476), so I think I wouldn’t have to do it again.

?. I was thinking about going the same route as well, unless WMR trick didn’t work.

 Thanks again guys.

Just make sure to avoid inplace upgrades. You may regret that later on... :excl::salute:
