Cleaning Cockpit Window

I'm new to IL-2. Last night I installed BOS and started the campaign. I was chasing the bomber and not sure why and how, my cockpit window got covered with black smudge preventing me from seeing. I tried mapping the clean windows key binding to HOTAS but pressing it wouldn't do anything. What's this black smudge on the window and how to clean it or prevent it from happening?

If you open the canopy, on planes that you can do that with, and lean out to look down the side of the plane, you'll get oil on your goggles too. Now you are in a pickle!!

Yes... and it will keep leaking from the damaged engine. I agree with the advice to avoid getting that badly damaged...

 

It also isn't really that possible to climb out of your seat in a moving fighter aircraft and clean the windscreen by hand... so if you are that badly hit - just consider that you've effectively been shot down and abort your mission (try to find somewhere safe to land).

I have tried flying through a cloud to clean the windscreen when it was covered with oil like I have heard described in various histories.

 

It doesn't work. It would be cool if it did.
