Joystick gremlin, rsmapper, joytokey, none of them work, il2 BoS

I'm now about 5 hours into just setting up my hotas one x for battle of stalingrad, and I've now tried every key mapping tool I can find and none of them work.

Shift, control, alt, both left and right, aren't detected when I map them to my hotas. Only the button on the hotas itself is picked up.

E.g. If I map button 5 to L alt in any of the key mapping programs I've tried, then the game only picks up a button 5 press, not L alt.

I've set throttle button five to l-shift in joytokey, gremlin, smapper, launched IL2.

I've tried used the keyboard to enter Shift +fire or whatever other button in the key mapping menu in IL2. It picks up the input from button 5. It picks up shift from the keyboard, but not when it's mapped to the hotas, so I'm able to map shift+button 5 in the menu but it doesn't work in the game.

Button 5 will only ever execute button 5. There's no key that I can set in any of the key mapping programs that I can use as modifiers. Doesn't matter if it's Lshift, LCTRL, LALT, Rshift,RCTRL, RALT, none of these will be entered from the HOTAS, only the actual HOTAS button. The behaviour is the exact same from every keymapping app I've used.

Button 5 will only enter input for button 5. It will not send Shift, CTRL, etc etc to the game.

Each program works fine outside of IL2. I can change using any of the mapping programs I discussed and it will work in notepad.

I'm at my wit's end here. I want to play in VR so using the keyboard isn't an option. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

Due the way that game controls is coded, only Joystick Gremlin is usefull for use key modifiers - Alt, Ctrl, Shift... because  is need set a delay between e.g. LAlt and A (or whatever key).

Since JoyTo Key and RSMapper don't allow set delay, their use is limited for "advanced" users that will redo default keyboard assignments for their needs eliminating Alt/Ctrl/Shift+key combos.

Appreciate the inisght there but joystick gremlin doesn't work. If I map shift to button 5 in joystick gremlin, it inputs button 5. not shift.

Delay or lack of it isn't the issue.

Hi,

I use these modifiers for IL-2 in Joystick Gremlin like they are defined in the control settings and never had a problem. But maybe I do not understand your problem?

These are some pictures.

Well, you didn't specify the problem you were having, "Gremlin joystick doesn't work" can be for several reasons.

One is forget to start the keymapper (Joystick Grenlin, JoyToKey, etc) "As administrator", if don't do this, Windows UAC prevent game see the external keypress.

Anyway JoytToKey and SVmapper work for just press Shift*, I have tested, see the topic bellow. Joystick Gremlin is too overkill for just press "Shift".

Could be that the issue is that you are pressing the button #5 in game assignment expecting a Shift (L or R) press, but there you should press the Shift (L or R) key instead, then in game when press the #5 game will see the Shift press send by the keymapper used. Keep #5 button unassigned for any command.

* In JoyToKey, if you set e.g. button #5 = Shift this will act as R and R Shift. If want an specific L or R, e.g. LShift only, select in JoyToKey menu.

BTW - Is possible too use button # 5 as modifier for other joysticks buttons (or keys), but is not possible assign in game controls GUI, is need add the button manually in "current.action" file in game Data\Input folder.

Eg. setting trigger for fire machine guns and plus button #5 fire rockets:

machineguns_fire,                                 joy0_b13,                                         0| // Fire weapon group 1

launch_rockets_command,                   joy0_b5+joy0_b13                           0| // Launch rockets

Not correct, the delay function could be used in RsMapper using Sequencies:

Here an example, to record a video kaymapping is LCTRL+R,  here I've created a sequence of two actions: recording1 where LCTRL is pressed for 600ms and recording2 where the R key is pressed with a delay of 100ms. Then associate the sequence "RECORDING" to a button:

Kaponne,

Thanks for the tips, I remember testing the RSP mapper when it was released, i think in 2018, and at the time it didn't have this "sequence" and delay function.

The actual version is a practical alternative for il-2:GB since don't require install drivers like Joystick Gremlin, just run from a folder, including can Alt+tab and start RSMapper after the game, or change configurations during a game session.

Important, start "As administrator"

Yes it's good piece of stuff, only an issue for players with italian keyboard, it does not recognize  three keys we have in italian display: one with the symbol < and > , the onewith ' symbol which IL2 recognise as "equals" and the one with ì symbol which IL" recognise as "minus". I had to remap ingame minus and equals with two unused keys ( q and y ).
