Is it something that needs to be activated? Just did 2 quick missions in a P-51D and don't see the effects of this. Looks like the old damage representation.

Yeah, this is happening to me too. Regardless of caliber the only damage being displayed on the plane is always the same decals in the same spots.

DVD is not yet there for the planes

It is for the P51.

Strange it's not working for some people. It's working fine for me.

Ah, you're right, my bad. I misread the announcement. I had the impression that it was only implemented for the tanks at this stage.

It is working quite well (Try using the pistol to shoot holes in the wings of your own Nieuport 28!)

Just remember that the old damage system is still there too - and is needed to produce better looking damage from things like cannon impacts. If you just took one or two 20mm cannon shells - then it will probably look a lot like the existing damage system (with lots of skin torn away etc.) because that is mostly what is being used. If you get hit by machine-gun rounds it'll look quite different.

I just put a burst into the tail of a P-51 and it has entry holes and exit holes that match the firing angle of my burst - so it clearly is working.

Does this work with all custom skins aswell? i did a quick test yesterday and saw no new effects

Ive found that I was wrong when I said it wasnt caliber dependent. There is a problem with German 30mm not displaying proper damage.

I have the same issue here. Tested it against some P-51’s (was flying a G6 late with 20mm) and i’m seeing a mix of old an new damage visuals.

old an new damage visuals.

That is exactly what you should be seeing and has been stated multiple times by the devs.

Here's the result of my tests:

AP 37mm from the Yak-9T:

My verdict here is that 37mm probably aren't yet modelled. I'll try to confirm this theory later by using only 20mm AP in the La-5FN. The smaller holes in the nose are evidently from the old damage visuals; but you can clearly see the oblong hole made by a 37mm above the exhaust area, which is the new DVD system. The small holes in the right wing are 37mm. I only fired 37mm in this exercise.

37mm HE from the Yak-9T:

This damage is from one strike near the right wing root. It appears to create a smattering of 20mm-sized HE holes.

German 13mm from a 109G-6:

German 20mm from a 109G-6, fired after 13mm in the above screen:

British .303 fired from a Spitfire XIV:

I retract my above statement about the 37mm. At first I thought the holes from it looked far too small, but it turns out that solid 20mm AP looks even smaller.

This was from an La-5FN with only AP rounds:

He was more or less at 90 degree deflection when I fired at him blindly (over my nose). I should do another test to see if 20mm AP fired from a shallower angle will make oblong holes.

Here's some subtle close-ups.

20mm AP, from an La-5FN:

You can pretty easily differentiate the oblong strikes (DVD) from the generic damage. I fired from behind instead of above, to better show the difference.

Here's another shot of .303s:

If you look closely, you can see the indentation separately from the actual hole.
