Matze81 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 We were just talking about that story the other day at work. Of course, one should never think that they were all "Knights of the skies" with honor and respect for their opponents back then, but I'm proud that there were Luftwaffe pilots like Franz Stigler in the war. In my opinion, that story and that man should be an inspiration for modern day Luftwaffe aviators. At least to me he is. (I'm sure there are stories like that about allied pilots as well)
Alky Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Several years ago I had the opportunity to meet Franz Stigler. He belonged to the Abbotsford (BC Canada) Flying club. Unfortunately, I was busy at the time and couldn't make it and have since lost the contact. I would think that he's passed away by now. One of the interesting quotes I heard about him from the flying club members was that he was a far better pilot than he was a driver of a car. Apparently he was a terrible driver LOL. I saw an interview on a Seattle TV station where he and the B-17 pilot were re-united, it was quite emotional.
Stab/JG1_Britchot Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I picked up this book when it released and it is one of the best biographies that I've had the pleasure to read. I highly recommend it to anyone. Yes, Franz Stigler passed away in March of 2008, only 8 months prior to Charlie Brown, the Pilot of the B-17.
II./JG27_Rich Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) I first knew of this story just after they finally met up again in the 90s. They had a little story about it on BCTV or CHBC here in Canada. Franz said as a joke he sometimes wished he would have shot Charlie down because he keeps bothering me. Edited June 26, 2013 by Richie
01Wingchaps Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I'm reading the book now. As of this point, it's focussing on Franz Stigler, and tells of his adventures in the BF-109 after his education and tenure as a flight instructor. Very clear little bit on the 109 being a 'boom-n-zoom' fighter. It really pumps me up for BOS...
DD_Crash Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I read that there could be a film made, as the film rights to the book have been sorted out.
