216th_Jordan Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 Hello! Title basically says it all - I've been trying to find out what the line detail_rt_res = 512 under the graphics tab in the startup.cfg does. Maybe someone can help me out! Thanks. o7
Frakkas Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 This controls the overall Texture quality of tree/grass/bushes and so on. 1

=Karaya69=VikingSail Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 I asked the same question some weeks ago on reddit. And they pointed me to the forum. I did some testing with different values for this parameter and compared the results (in video and image forms) and I didn't notice any significant difference in the overall texture quality of the foliage but quite a few other things. I have tested with detail_rt_res = 128 detail_rt_res = 512 detail_rt_res = 1024 detail_rt_res = 4096 There is a sphere around the camera which determines the LOD of the ground. In other words, if you set this parameter too low, there will be a noticeable circular border outside the cockpit where the outside is noticeably flat and with a lower terrain texture quality. For example at below 512, it will be about 3-4 meters away from the cockpit. The virtual object markers in the world disappears at a much closer range. For example on CombatBox train and doghfight server, in the take-off and landing practise area there are a few dozens of red/green loops for guidance purposes. These will disappear at around 1 km range with a value of 128. With "Distant Buildings" enabled, if the available VRAM is low, one might see city blocks pops in when looking at different directions. A low value for this parameter significantly lowers the time for loading these textures. TL:DR from personal testing this parameter does not affect the foliage quality in any significant way, if any. But rather it affects the texture quality AND the LOD of extra objects on the map, e.g. buildings blocks, objective markers, as well as the size of the higher quality terrain sphere arouond the camera. 1 1
