Now let us know if it was worth the wait (and cost). If you play in VR please let us know the FPS before and after.

Yikes...congrats I guess.

Even the 3080 is overpriced at this juncture let alone the 3090...gunning for the 3070 now unless my name comes up in the EVGA que.

You should have waited for the 4090.

It's appropriate that the 3090 box has the colours of a unicorn. There's either none or just that one.

Happy 4k! :drinks:

After a while you will realize that is the wrong way to look at it ?

I procrastinated, pondered and pontificated before committing to purchasing a RTX 3090.

Turns out I should have been treating it as an investment exercise as the place where I bought it is now selling them for $650 AUD more.

So the moral of the story was/ is .....................................................   Should have bought half a dozen! ?

Does that "Alternate reality" help with the missing arm and a leg?

I actually was after a 3080 but have never seen them available here in Oz, in the wild, whereas the RTX 3090 was plentiful and everyone had them in stock.

Situation is different now as people have given up on the 3080 and have bitten the bullet and stumped up for a 3090. So now a bit harder to find and extra prima pricing.

Nvidia and the PC re-sellers must be laughing all the way to the Bank!, whereas we are all ?

I still have two lungs, one liver, one eye one arm and one leg left for it.

Hope it does not come too early though ?

I have installed the newly received RTX 3090 in my system, and have tested it with IL2.

Here under some numbers you could use to compare with your system and graphic board.

First my system specs:

CPU Intel 9900K  running at 5.0 Ghz.

Memory is 64GB DDR4 G-Skill 2132 Mhz RAM

Motherboard is a Asus Maximus XI Z390 Board.

The Graphic Board is the Asus ROG Strix RTX 3090 Gaming OC 24G running stock at 1860/1219 MHz

I have a Be Quiet dark pro 1200 Watt Titanium Power Supply.

Display is full 4K 3840 x 2160 60Hz LG 43" LED display.

I had before a 2800Ti and was also running 4K. On Il2 on average in terms of FPS the gains are just very incredible.

It is exceptional to have such an improvement from one generation to another.

The graphics setting on the IL2 interface were as the picture below

1960882299_IL2TestGraphicSettings.thumb.jpg.36d663babe3dee840303f49dfbfd54fc.jpg

As you can see there is No Antialiasing and No VSync. All the rest is to the absolute max.

Then I have also configured the 3D Parameters of the Nvidia RTX 3090 interface also with basically all filtering, antialising, processing deactivated.

Except Image Quality parameter that stands at Highest Quality which means all filtering is deactivated. In fact it is faster in this way, instead of High Performance which is slower here. Occlusion is deactivated as well as MFAA which is the Nividia variant of MSAA.

So we have the raw image with the fastest possible rendering. To avoid any CPU bottleneck there is no target at all. No moving objects other that the I16 plane which is requesting little resources.

First I tried to have the highest possible framerate in game. To do this I used the Lapino Winter map with Quick Mission at Dosnkoy with one unique plane the simple I16, no clouds and no targets. In this way there is no CPU bottleneck issue.

Then I Flew the I16 in autopilot and let the plane go and displayed just the blue sky with no plane nothing, just a blue screen and the plane is flying on the map at 3000mt but is not seen. This is the maximum throughput you can get. Framerate was at 457 FPS. This is the maximum I could get. The GPU Load was at 99%. I can suppose from that that the CPU was not bottlenecking. Power consumption of the GPU board was at 398 Watts. That's really a lot. Cooling is effective not too noisy so a pretty excellent board here.

In this game you can have a high framerate but still the time dilation effect where speeds slowdown, due to CPU bottleneck.

All the case here are not affected by any measurable time dilation, and so only FPS is affected.

I tested various configurations on Lapino Map (light) and Kuban map (more heavy and with sea and mountains). I also used one I16 simple plane on both maps and one H111-H16 on the Kuban one.

You can get higher framerates than 457 if you lower the graphic settings but that does not make any sense, because this board is to be used with the highest possible visual quality.

Nevertheless whatever the FPS you get slight image tearing when you pan across as here we have no parameter to avoid it.

The most effective way to avoid the tearing is to use the Nvidia 3D driver parameter on VSync set to Rapid. This is the optimal way to avoid image tearing but without limiting the FPS. Leave the IL2 Graphic setting on Vsync to OFF.

You have two types of view, from the cockpit or outside the cockpit. Cockpits are now 4K and it is interesting to see how they impact the FPS.

The FOV has an impact on FPS as you have more or less of the cockpit displayed. With max FOV you have a loss of about 5 FPS. But different cockpits will show differences as they have different visual complexity.

In all the tests below the GPU Load is at 98-99%. This means there is no CPU bottleneck.

So here some first results using the Quick Mission facility:

I16 on Lapino Winter flying around Donskoy at 3000mt.

No Clouds, No enemy targets

Graphic settings as per Image above.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 330 to 457 FPS  -> (VSync Rapid) 240 to 300 (Image stability comes at a price)

Cockpit view 328 FPS

Clouds set to Heavy at 1000 mt.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 215 to 380 FPS

Cockpit View 175 FPS

All target types are activated and plane now flies at 300mt. This allows for a more crowded image with ground detail and action.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 170 to 320 FPS

Cockpit view 135

I16 on Kuban Spring flying around Gelendzhik / Novorossiysk at 3000mt.

No Clouds, No enemy targets

Graphic settings as per Image above.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 230 to 370 FPS

Cockpit view 330

Here we see that the more complex Kuban map has an impact.

Clouds set to Heavy at 1000 mt.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 210 to 360 FPS

Cockpit View 173 FPS

All target types are activated and plane now flies at 300mt.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 160 to 305 FPS

Cockpit view 132

I16 on Kuban Spring flying around Highest mountains at 2200mt.

Graphic settings as per Image above.

Clouds set to Heavy at 1000 mt.

All target types are activated.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 160 to 355 FPS

Cockpit view 145

One can see that flying with the large mountains around and high snow peaks around has no impact. It is even faster than a lush green flatland with a lot of forests and cities. On the Kuban map if you fly at sea and in your display you have only the sea no land FPS goes up. In fact the worst impact is when the horizon is very far to the max and the land is visible. More land visible more impact. But still we are at very high FPS here whatever.

Now lets move to the HE111-H16 on the Kuban map.

HE111-H16 on Kuban Spring flying around Gelendzhik/Novorossiysk at 3000mt.

Graphic settings as per Image above.

Clouds set to Heavy at 1000 mt.

All target types are activated. (Here we have three destroyers submarine, and various ground targets all active)

Outside view (VSync OFF) 170 to 305 FPS

Cockpit view 150

Now Flying at 300mt with very crowded visual with land, ships firing, clouds, sea etc.

Outside view (VSync OFF) 125 to 290 FPS

Cockpit view 140

Stay tuned for the next tests this time with full image quality I mean MSAA set to 8X and Vsync set to Rapid.

As you know MSAA is a frame killer. We will see how the 3090 handles it.

Uhmm....Just a bit below the Thanos PC... ?

If you have a chance, you could run the SYN_VANDER bench for CPU and GPU (4K). We only have one GPU test of the 3090 at 4K.

If you fly VR then you can also run the VR tests.

I can get higher than 457 with lower res and not setting all graphic parameters to the max, but it will not mean anything.

I am also running all in stock there is no overclocking of CPU or GPU.
