Hi All

I'm in the market for a new high end laptop and VR headset. Primarily the laptop and VR headset would be used for work (Architectural walkthroughs) but would be great to use for playing IL2 as well.

I know Laptops + VR are not the perfect match for playing IL2 but I need the portability for work. Hey Im just happy I can right this off as a business expenses :)

For the laptop Im looking at a:

ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR G733QS-HG015T 17.3

* AMD Ryzen R9 5900HX 8C up to 4.6 GHz

* nVIDIA RTX3080 16GB 130W
* Liquid Metal Cooling, 4 heatsinks & fan outlets, 84 fan blades
* Optical Mechanical Per-key RGB Keyboard, 1.9mm travel distance
* High-Cap 90Wh Battery, Type-C Charging

* KeyStone II, AURA Sync, 2-Year Warranty
* Total of Two M.2 NVMe SSD slots
* 4x Speakers, 5.1.2 Channel, Two-way AI Noise Cancelation
* 2xM.2, Support RAID, WiFi6 & more

For the VR Headset I'm really confused. It seem the HP Reverb G2 or Oculus Quest 2 are very popular options. Im used to the WMR set up as owned the first HP WMR but am open to going Oculus. From a work perspective I really dont think it matters. I can't see clients seeing the difference which brings the discussion down to playing IL2.

Does anyone have experience with VR and high end laptops or knows the positives and negatives of certain VR setups with laptops?

Appreciate any help.

That laptop is currently the best you can have for IL-2.

On the CPU side the Ryzen 9 is the best performer for single core. We still need to see how the 11th gen CPU chips from intel performs in IL-2, and also right now there is no 11th gen CPU with 3080.

On the GPU side that card is also the best you can have for laptops.

I was using VR (DK1, DK2, CV1, Rift-S) in the past with laptops for work (petrochemical plants). And they worked OK.

For the VR headset, specially for architectural or IL-2, I would pick the Reverb G2 due to the better resolution and audio.

Please, let us know how it goes.

I am also looking at RTX 30 laptops. Did you end up buying ASUS?

I think G2 is the best choice for laptops as it does not need basestations.

I run il-2 on my Rift S with an i7-9750h and rtx 2070 maxq (razer blade 15). It does pretty well. No matter what system one has, il-2 still seems to stutter from time to time.

FYI, Intel Tiger Lake H45 is much better for gaming than Ryzen, especially in single core loads. Like 20-25% better which is substantial. Something like the i7-11800h would as good or better than most every current desktop cpu in il-2, even most Ryzen Zen 3 systems. The mobile gpus are another story.

I use an Index in my pit with my 3080 PC.

But do have an Asus 3060 gaming laptop that I tested my son's Quest 2 on.

I found it acceptable in IL2 with lower settings.  That was a while ago using the USB-c cable. But Airlink is live now and could be a good solution.

I'm running a quest 2 with a Dell XPS15-9500 i7-100875H connected to an egpu with a Vega 64.

Seems to be happiest running virtual desktop with IL2 set to high detail and VD set to medium detail.. I get about 50fps in the quick missions and can see all the gauges clearly without having to move my head.  Looking forward to upgrading to a better video card when the prices get reasonable would be nice seeing it at 90fps on ultra.

I am playing on Omen 17 with RTX 2070 Super, getting stable & smooth 72 FPS in most situations with Balanced settings and default helmet resolution (Quest 2 VR). Of course there are frame drops now and then in tight combat situations with flak and aerial gun blazing around. Probably will wait for the next generation of mobile GPS before upgrading.

Thread revival, looking for advice.

I'm on a gaming laptop now; the reasons are a long story. Not looking to have the laptop vs desktop discussion. I previously was on a desktop with a 2080; tried the Vive Pro, Pimax, Index, and Reverb G1; loved the index and stuck with that.

Now, on a laptop, and I'm considering either a Quest 2 or a G2. Quest 2 would allow my wife and I to more easily enjoy something like beat saber together, but honestly neither one of us care a ton about that. Sims would be the priority.

I have a Lenovo Legion 7i: i7 11800H, RTX 3070 (mobile, just to say that one more time) running up to 140W (big boi), and 16 GB RAM.

Not looking to max everything out; rather, looking for an enjoyable and not-too-painful experience. TrackIR really is so hard to go back to. VR is way more important than chair, HOTAS, etc...I don't have those things anymore, but what I really miss is the VR.

Thoughts? I initially thought the G2 would be more taxing on my computer, but it looks like the Link concept really complicates things.

A big THANK YOU in advance!

You have tried the G1's resolution and decided for the Index in the past.

You're not looking to max everything out, rather, look for the enjoyable and not too painful experience. You also play games in which tracking is important too.

Certainly, the G2 would give you that 10-15% higher resolution and vivid colors. But it's hard to play anything else but Sims/Racing with it. The Quest 2 has many more advantages over it:

The Quest 2 would be my recommendation, if you add some headstrap with battery like Bobovr M2, some headphones, a good WiFi 6 Router, to enjoy the portability. Your Laptop won't have to power the headset this way (don't underestimate the power drain of a wired G2). You retain the full portability, and send the signal through the router. You retain the easy-setup and henceforth easy start-up experience of the Quest 2. You retain the ability to enjoy games with your wife more easily (don't underestimate the frustration that WMR controllers bring in Beat Saber or similar games, or if setup has failed the third time this week because the playspace wasn't properly recognized). So, Quest 2 all the way.
