KevPBur Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 First of all I am new to IL2 (this time around) and PWCG and I am loving the dynamic campaign so far. I've just flown a rather uneventful patrol where my greatest challenge was staying somewhere near in formation for an hour. Uneventful is generally good in a Lagg 3 as so far I have found the safest thing to do on spotting and enemy plane is to open the canopy and jump! However, on reviewing the mission report afterwards I see there was a German flight of fighters but 3 of them just crashed. there was a flight of IL2's somewhere in the area of the crashes. Maybe it was the ai playing lawn darts with 109's diving on the low flying IL2's but just in case it wasn't and it is an issue I've attached the zipped report. PatrickAWlson Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 Happens. PWCG does not control the AI. It might have put that oh so tempting IL2 underneath them, but it's up to the AI to shoot it down without lawn darting.
migmadmarine Posted April 5, 2021 Posted April 5, 2021 I've seen some discussion of the 109 AI being prone to lawn darting lately, so hopefully it will be resolved before too long.
Props Posted April 5, 2021 Posted April 5, 2021 I too have seen many AI lawndarts of late. I always fly outnumbered to work on situational awareness, etc. and when things get low and defensive the boom and zoom high enemy AIs routinely kamikaze the local landscape coming after me. I had a recent SP mission on the Stalingrad map, 4 P-51s (Veteran setting) vs 8 enemy: 4 190s & 4 109s (Veteran and Ace settings) where when I checked my six as I was going nose to nose with a FW-190 at 250m AGL I got to watch 3 AI lawndart in a nice straight line of craters like a precision lawndart aerobatic display team. Boom, Boom, boom in perfect harmony. Of course this frustrates me sometimes when I'm doing really well and want an opportunity to shoot them down rather watch them commit hari-kari. And other times, like when I run out of ammo I don't mind at all?. I haven't really noticed this behavior with my Allied wingmen, though they always decide to go home while I'm fending off multiple adversaries. I must admit I have been flying allied aircraft exclusively since I got my RTX 3080 installed, pretty much on the bigger maps with cities and forest to stress test the undervolting experiments I've been running with a standard set of SP missions (I now have a nice smooth and stable profile at good temps), so I'll have to switch up into Axis AC to see if the Allied AI are as proficient in finding terra firma at high speed.
KevPBur Posted April 5, 2021 Author Posted April 5, 2021 It does seem to be a Luftwaffe issue, the Russians just like to get back for a vodka asap. It also happens in the regular career mode so not specifically a PWCG issue. I'd had a couple of very quiet missions before realising from the report that this may have been the reason. As you say, when you have a line of 109's on your tail it is handy to have the Russian scenary as a wingman! 1
PatrickAWlson Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 Not really. I mostly fly LW and my Russian opponents lawn dart on a regular basis. Yaks seem to be a favorite.
