Career mode - managing new pilots as commander - does it matter?

New to the game and flying a BoM career. I've been promoted to commander and I'm wondering whether it matters if I try to increase new pilots' experience by bringing them along on free hunt missions, etc. 

 

Will it make the squadron (sorry, I know that's not the right word but you know what I mean) work better? Does the game care if these guys have 10 successful missions? Do they fight any better? 

 

Or should I just turn off the commander option and fly around.

I believe they do increase in skill the more missions they fly. It might be tricky to get them to survive that long, though.
