I want to get into expert mode to be able to learn how to, and take advantage of my aircrafts full engine controls. The one major thing that erks me is the fact that the Expert mini-map doesn't show my position on the map. If I can't exactly tell where I am, how am I supposed to intelligently navigate around the map?

Am I missing something? Is there some tricks that people are using. I fully understand why it doesn't show enemy air unit positions. It does seem a real life scenario could show static ground units though, simply because of reconnaissance.

You need to use landmarks on the ground to determine your position.  It should be easier to do when the compass is fixed and when they make the map "zoomable".

Expert is as close to reality as the sim can allow. Think of the mini-map as a paper map. It can't show you your position.

You have to use ded reckonking as a real pilot does. On the short map memorize the position of both of the forward airbases and the general compass headings (when implemented) to both. For now use the sun's position in a pinch. Over time you will begin to recognize ground features such as forests and towns by flying through the airspace above. In later releases it will be easier because you will also recognize rivers and lakes. For now - get to know your environment. It's all you got man.

Yea, I guess that's a huge thing for me right now is recognizing land markers. I need to train my eyes, all the ground looks the same to me.

If all else fails, land and ask for directions!

Rise of Flight will always show your position on the ground, not sure if BoS is the same.

IIRC on RoF on x2 settings it is the same. Navigate by landmarks.

Wait why will it be easier? Is there some change coming?

No, no change. The next release, after BOS is complete, MAY, may, MAY have maps other than winter. Don't get ahead of ourselves :)

Maybe the future in game shall have more terrain details on it?! :)

Other theatres will but Stalingrad seems pretty flat overall. Water features (rivers/lakes) and possibly some of the dry terrain (farming/crops?) features will be important spring, summer and (can't wait for) fall navigational aids.

I just took screenshots of the maps and display them on a laptop while I fly on my desktop. Works very well, like a paper map in real life. Landmarks, such as rivers, forests, bridges, and airfields, are clearly distinguishable. In some areas there are also steep river banks that can be used for orientation (e.g. along the Don river). As long as the compass hasn't been fixed, the position of the sun serves as a clear direction indicator.
