Field modifications

During WW2 front line soldiers, sailors and airmen modified there weapons of war. Some of these modifications could be called failures while others were so-so and others even ended up being factory produced.

 

Some that come to mind are:

 

- Pappy Gunn's mounting multiple .50" hmg to the nose of the A-20

- PT boat crews mounted the 37mm cannon from the P-39 to the foredeck of their boats

- the Wirbelwind originated on the Eastern Front

- some Spitfires were modified to carry beer kegs instead of bombs

- Sherman tanks had sand bags on their glacis for extra protection
