Playable Train?

Recommended Posts

You have added Tanks and will also add Vehicle Mounted Anti-Aircraft Gun, do you have any plans to make the locomotive playable in the future?

I was thinking it would be a lot of fun to take troops and supplies by train in multiplayer. It would be great to defend the train with Anti-Aircraft Gun, and to be able to handle the locomotive like a train simulator, especially in VR.

what do you think?

100% Support this. I think a fully fledged out module of trains would really bring the game to life. Think about how cool it would be to get strafed by a flight of Tempests while you're trying to get to whatever your destination may be. Having some crew management aspect to it would be great as well.

That movie has already been done.

No. Sorry.

Up there with moving pilot eyes as superfluous and unnecessary.

I think this could be a significant untapped source of revenue for 1c to explore. Boomers love airplanes, smoked meats, and model railroads. I’m sure at least as many people that paid for Tank Crew could be convinced to open their wallets for some DLC locomotives. 1c stands to make tens of dollars from this.

I actually support this myself :) I'd love to travel around IOW in a train... the sim is pretty detailed, although the track isn't really (they'd need to install working switches etc.)...

I think I actually asked Team Fusion about that once (shortly after riding around on a train via the controllable anti-aircraft guns). Probably a lower priority than torpedo boats or more tanks I should think though... and we could really do with a few AI aircraft to make the historical plane sets more complete.

That said - regarding improvements that would benefit air-combat ...making a refinement pass on train behaviours and physics would be good. IMHO, trains should usually come to a halt under attack, try to put up a smokescreen, and have their crews bail out... and damage to a railcar should cause it to catch on fire while still moving, while catastrophic damage should lead to a derailment of other cars. What we currently have is an automatic uncoupling and breaking of all the cars behind the destroyed car... which isn't that realistic.

For a first step it would be nice to simulate some basics: trains with 50 waggons, combine a basic set of waggons to different types of trains. Add simple switches and a most primitive signalling logic to offer a whole new world of immersive campaigns. Except the pure shooter kids all other pilots immediately see a rise of operational options, reason and immersion. Mission builders wait for the basic train options from the very beginning.
Btw: first step for an enhanced train simulation would be a rail-road-map-editor, strict rules and quality-control for the community-input to build the historically correct train-routes. Given that I bet within some month we'd see the most impressive simulation of a historical railroad-system for every map. But there's history buffs dream and business men calculation ...

My guess would be about 3.25 of us.

No. Seems super boring to me. There are already train sim games, It’s a different audience altogether.

Now, if you're going to do an Airplane! type quote it should read "It's a different audience....altogether.

What's not to be serious about? The shoveling of coal into the firebox in the hopes of gaining another kilometer per hour in speed to evade the two Fw-190's coming in on your caboose for another strafing run... the adjustments to the Johnson bar to throw off their aim as they open fire... the excitement of opening a release valve at just the right time to eject a cloud of steam from the blower pipe right in their path as they streak by, scalding one of the pilots and causing him to lose control and crash... That feeling of accomplishment and relief as you bring your iron horse to a perfect stop in front of the railyard's water tank and take on a fresh load of boiler water in anticipation of your next mission.    Lots of room for immersion here!

If they included first person bailout mechanics when you jump from the moving train to avoid getting strafed, I'll buy it.

Trains and the entire train network is just too simplified to make trains playable.

Trains can't drive over high grade/slopes in real life and in this game grades are insane, this is especially noticeable with bridges.

The reason this is done in the game is that they don't need to make embankments and tunnels for traintracks which speeds the routebuilding process.

We don't have junctions or even connected tracks for these to work.

The entire tracknetwork has to be built from scratch on each map which is just not going to happen.

These are just some of the main issues that to be adresses in order to make trains playable in any realistic sence.

3.23, I'm personally bringing the average down a tad.

See, I just knew that as an experienced P-47 driver, you'd quickly latch on to the parallels of piloting 94 tons of steaming, fiery iron down the tracks on a fixed trajectory toward glory and certain doom.  It's intoxicating., isn't it?!

I'm even more looking forward to the potential Multiplayer squadrons that we might see form out of this as players find mutual interest in combining tactics in the online environment:

All it took was to read this post,  and now I'm sold. Take my money for the train module 1C! ?

Sorry, I guess I didn't gauge the tone of the thread, I'm really running out of steam lately. Next time I'll make sure I do it in the right (of) way.

I'd be ok with making the AAA wagons controllable if it's just low effort copy the mechanism of the controllable truck.

Definitely not interested in controlling the train though.

Well, for one, train sims are super boring generally; IL2 trains are more fun; full of steam and you can blow 'em up.

As player in a train you''l get complaints about the bumpy rides however.

Ambushing trains and blowing them up with tanks is good sport, what i miss there is an armored willys.

What about a possibility for French resistance workers to do just that? Wouldn't make BoN even beterr?
