The case for "Battle of Inchon"

Throwing this out there as a next potential release for the IL-2 series.  Going in a completely different direction than WWII while giving the opportunity to finally introduce carrier based aircraft into the sim without the "hurdle" of finding info on Japanese aircraft since the North Korean Air Force flew soviet era aircraft which the devs should be able to get access to.  This will also bring early era jet combat in a sim which really hasn't been done in-depth since "Mig Alley" released in the late 90s. DCS has two Korean war era jets with no applicable maps, ground units, voicepacks, campaigns etc so it'd be a great place for the IL-2 team to put their down flag and grab a new potential customer base.

The Inchon invasion (Operation Chromite) was a massive military operation and was the turning around point for the first year of the conflict.  A potential career could start at in June 1950 and end in December of 1950.

Plane List:

United Nations -

F-80C Shooting Star

F-51D Mustang (P-51D-30)

F9F-3 Panther

Sea Fury FB.11

F4U-4B Corsair (Collectors Plane)

North Korea/China/Soviet Union -

MiG-15

IL-10

LA-9

LA-11

Yak-9P (Collectors Plane)

Additional AI Aircraft -

A-26 Invader

Tu-2

Introduction of carrier operations into the Great Battles series with the USS Valley Forge and HMS Theseus and applicable fleet supporting ships.  An extra collectors plane release could be used to eventually do the F-86A

I wouldn’t like this very much to be honest.

The Korean War without sabres? Missing one of two most iconic a/c of the war. I see your point of course - if you go later the red side would be migs only - but still I think this is even less marketable than Battle of France.

this poll supports that opinion as well.

I personally would also rather stay in WWII - or go even earlier with the Spanish civil war (which is probably as unmarketable as the Korean War)

No thanks. There is still so many theaters to cover in ww2.

to me going to Korea without F-86 vs MiG-15 matchup would be hard. If they go i think i would aim for later parts of war (because of map size).

And ditch 5v5 system for it and have 3-7 in favor of UN forces for example.

Yeah, the Sabre would definitely be a draw but I wanted to make sure the "United Nations" element was actually in the package too with the F-51D (USAF, South Africa, South Korea and Australia) and Sea Fury (Royal Navy).

Doing the Korean War seems like the only way we'll ever get carrier operations in the Great Battles series, I don't see the current Japanese documentation "hurdle" going anywhere anytime soon with how things are currently being handled...

I'd definitely support a Battle of France package too, some of their aircraft like the D520 and MS406 are pretty interesting but I also wouldn't mind the devs going in a new and largely uncovered era like the Korean War that finally brings us carrier operations too.

United Nations -

F-80C Shooting Star: fine

F-51D Mustang: fine

F9F-3 Panther: substitute with F9F-2,-3 had low production run and was really uncommon

Sea Fury FB.11: round off USN set first, replace with AD-2/4

F4U-4B Corsair (Collectors Plane): mods will permit both .50cals and 20mm guns version

North Korea/China/Soviet Union -

MiG-15: Bis was the most common variant, old plain 15 were less common (maybe mods?)

IL-10: fine

LA-9: merge with La-11 through mods

LA-11: see above

Yak-9P (Collectors Plane): it shouldn't be a collector plane as it was the main NK fighter for the first month's of the war

Additional AI Aircraft -

A-26 Invader: B-26 :P

Tu-2: fine, but could be made flyable for a 5 plane set

A quick review of proposed planes, the set could use a rework though

I think Korea could be a good choice. It’s expandable too and certainly a way of introducing carrier operations.

Don’t forget Skyraiders and RAAF Meteors either.

No. 77 SQN flew Mustangs (P-51Ds and CA-18s) over Korea before converting to the Meteor, so I’m obviously biased towards including both of them.

There is no chance that a Korea module happens without the F-86.

I would dearly love to see Korea, but further down the road.
