[80 years ago today] "• The US Army orders thirteen Northrop YP-61 pre-production prototypes. The aircraft will not make its maiden flight for more than a year."

 

"YP-61. The Black Widow is the first American aircraft designed to mount radar and the first American aircraft designed as a night-fighter. It will be beset with teething problems, not entering operational service until 1944. It will be found inferior to most British and German night fighters and often used as a daytime ground support aircraft. "
