Magellan Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Hello everyone ! So I don't know where to ask this question. I bought this helmet with the oxygen mask to play at IL-2, so why not to asking directly here ! My question is how I can setup this helmet cable connector to usb and get the audio from my computer and not from a real russian plane because I don't have one x) (( Not yet, who knows ? )) I read a post that someone have just changed the headphones with modern one but you have to cut a part of the helmet for this operation. So I will do this in last case... I hope somebody have a solution please. If you want to have the same one I have the link . Look how my helmet looking, I think is a "SHZ-84" : If I'm not wrong this is a four Russian pin connector is look like this one : This is perfect to have more immersion on this game. Next I need the Oculus rift :D
DD_bongodriver Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 You have entered into a field I have some experience in, I can tell you it is not going to be easy and I would steer clear of the USB interface (unless you plan on taking a USB headset and implanting it into the helmet) and stick with the much simpler audio jack solution. My experience with flight helmets is more to do with converting them to use in civil aircraft and can tell you the Soviet equipment has an impedance which doesn't match any NATO or civil impedances, the earphones are simple but if you want to use the microphone in the mask then you will have a struggle.
Magellan Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 Thanks for your answer. That's doesn't exist a USB adapter ? I like to dream I got this link that's maybe the only way to do it. http://www.instructables.com/id/Hacking-a-SHZ-84-Soviet-aviation-helmet/ Yes I want also to use the microphone :S. I have also this gear, I don't know what is it. I can connect this thing behind my helmet, I think it's the microphone. Inside is something really hard.
DD_bongodriver Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 there are USB adapters for western avionics, more specifically for US civil and military, if you make a plug adapter for Soviet to US civil/military you 'might' get a result but my experience with Soviet gear has been unsuccessful because of their different impedance. the item shown in your picture is a throat microphone, I have one without the leather covering. Here is a link to a company making USB adapters for the western headsets/helmets: http://www.flightsounds.com/
Sternjaeger Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 yep, as Bongo says your best bet is to find a suitable female connector and wire it with an audio jack cable, but yes, there are USB audio connects, problem is that I'm not sure the wiring is gonna be easy..
Sokol1 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) You are able to indentify the connectors in helmet plug? The second picture show a 4 pin connector, with one labeled "+"... Anyway look at this: http://www.pilot-shop.org/pilot-shop-org/eshop/1-1-PILOT-SUPPLIES/22-3-Headset-Accessories/5/34-ZSH-to-G-A-adapter Sokol1 Edited June 6, 2014 by Sokol1 1
DD_bongodriver Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Yes, that is a Soviet mil to civil GA adapter, but your problem won't end with simply the plug adapter, the microphones on military setups are unamplified dynamic microphones, there must be an amplifier cirquit involved if you want to get something out of it, I have not found a source for a convertor for soviet equipment, it didn't seem to work very well for me using western mil converters.
Sokol1 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) Dealing with impedance: http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/h_headset.html Impedance adapter - 20000 to 150 ohms - with Russian style plug: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Flight-Helmet-Fighter-Pilot-Helmet-Impedance-Converters-0701/251550279844?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D22946%26meid%3D7431384603491818080%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D9894%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D251550965601 These "easy" ways in the end result in a expensive solution and you dont know if speakers/mic on helmet still working... The easy and cheap way is hack a PC headset like in Instructables and plug the helmet in mobo audio output/mic imput... Sokol1 Edited June 6, 2014 by Sokol1
DD_bongodriver Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 WoW!! I could kiss you, that's an excellent find, ebay of all places.........I'm stunned, been looking for something like this for ages.
Sternjaeger Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 WoW!! I could kiss you, that's an excellent find, ebay of all places.........I'm stunned, been looking for something like this for ages. ah so it's ok to kiss Sokol but not chasing each other over Malta? Pffft... ok, so I have one of these, what if I wanted to use it? I'm talking throat mike and everything.

Given that Soviet flight gear was practically a direct copy of captured German stuff then I'd say it could work, might even fit the plug.
Sternjaeger Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 LOL Yeah so I thought, I'll give it a try at some point :-)
Magellan Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Hello, So thanks to all I fixed my problem by buying two adapter. The sound work and the microphone also ! Just the microphone is a little bit wired I think I should attach it to my arm and speak but it's quit of hard lol I'm ready to fly ! I bought so this two : http://www.flightsounds.com/ and http://www.pilot-shop.org/pilot-shop-org/eshop/1-1-PILOT-SUPPLIES/22-3-Headset-Accessories/5/34-ZSH-to-G-A-adapter
DD_bongodriver Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 That's interesting, weird that the microphone is working, civil headsets use a pre-amp in the microphone that military setups don't have. p.s. a throat microphone won't work very well on a boom, they rely on skin contact for full effect
