I set it up no issue but when 'in game' it acts real bad. Would there be any reason for that?

You're going to have to specify what you mean. What exactly happens? Are you unable to fully move the pilot's viewpoint? Does it start to drift over time?
Perhaps attach your TrackIR profile so people can see how it is set up? You could also try out some of the other custom profiles people have made to see if it fixes your problem.

Maybe you need to hit the TrackIR 'Center' button?

Yeah sorry.

So I set it up to how I like it in the Track IR app, I look to the edge of the screen and my ingame view turns 180, for example. In the sim itself I look look left or right and it either freaks out or just about manages to look 90 degrees. This is not a constant but the majority of the time I guess.

If it's freaking out it could be backlighting messing with the sensor. If its only going 90 degrees that may be a separate issue. I use a different head tracking device but I remember I had to make a few tweaks to get full range of motion.

Could you upload your current TIR profile and a screenshot of how you are setup in TIR? And a screenshot of your camera settings in game? Other people may

Also, I would go try to download Requiem's TIR profile from the stickied thread in the Manuals, Guides and Tips subforum. See if using his profile eliminates the problem. Even if you don't like how he has it set up it would let you know if the problem is the way TIR is setup or if its something else with the game. Air Combat Tutorials,TIR Profile, Angle Off Charts - Updated 26 Feb 2021 - Manuals, Tutorials, Guides and Tips - IL-2 Sturmovik Forum

In Trackir screen, click red update button in upper right hand corner and then try again.

Thanks.

I think I may have figured partly the problem.

It's probably to do with the fact that unless I sit in exactly the same position, with the brim of my cap at exactly the same angle and exactly the same distance away from the screen each time, I figure I am never going to get the same responses each 'flight'. ?

I don't think so.  I sit in an office chair on castors so I'm never in the same position but I have no problem with TrackIr.

As long as you recentre at your new location it should behave itself. Is there lots of light coming in behind you, like from a big window or lamps or such? That can throw off trackir sometimes.

Are you using a track clip with reflecting tape or a clip with uvleds? The reflecting tape can be more prone to make problems if you havent the uvleds in the TIRcamera set to high, thesettings are under the advanced settings camera position. play with the settings there, aspecially the Light Filter Threshold, the Video processing mode and the Pressision Mode Smooting (or buy a ledclip)

Check in Camara view that you're not getting reflections etc, you should only see the 3 green dots. I wear glasses & had to cover the little chrome hinges with black tape! Also had to fiddle with the settings as described by FlyingH. The tracking is 100% reliable now (famous last words)
