As I've mentioned in another forum, IMHO, the biggest hurdle for the acceptance of VR will not be the quality of the VR hardware or the price of the hardware. They have the technology, the capability of building the required parts, and the incentive to keep VR hardware at a low price point. The problem will be highend system requirements and gaming software optimized to run at the highest possible framerates. eg. Combat flight sims are notorious for their demand on systems.   One that BOS could struggle with until their software framerate is fully optimized. Maybe someone who has the DK1 can mention the frame rate required to run DCS WORLD or WT for a decent VR experience.

Intel has been working hard with the Oculus team to have their hardware optimized for VR, atleast according to this article.  We will have to do our homework before buying a quality computer system for VR.

yep 90hz 1440p will take at least a 4570k/780ti

Don't forget that, on Oculus Rift, the image will be rendered at half width, side-by-side like on your 3D TV.

That's going to require less power than a full screen 1440p image

Hmmmmm....you could be right but I was under the assumption that the screen was split in half, but the total would still add up to 1440P, so not sure where the power savings would be.

Also, keep in mind that by the time 1440p consumer version is released we will have Maxwell GPUs (GeForce 800 series) and probably the next batch of AMD hardware available.

No, you're right the total would add up to 1440p - but because it's basically the same image drawn twice, I'd imagine that's less costly to render them a full sized image.

It's two images that aren't identical due to the stereoscopic nature. Either way it doesn't matter to the GPU just like 5760x1080 is 6,220,800 pixels to render no matter if the gpu looks at it as 3 monitors or 1.
