Hi,

I am a former user of the Rift S (but sold it out due to the very low resolution of the ouside world in VR, though cockpits looked good enough).

How much is G2 better? Especially as for the contacts visibility and aircrafts silhouettes.

I am not sure if G2 is worth of my money so I would like to know your opinions on the subject.

THX very much.

P.S. For my PC specs PLS see signature.

As someone who has trialed both, definitely times better.

So much better that you cannot return to the Rift S, after you've tried the Reverb G2. The picture quality is just so different, and given you have acquired a 3080, it's the perfect match to have it lift the weight it can.

Contacts visibility is similar as it's defined by the game engine, based on resolution output. We have tested again and again and there is a clear dependency. It's tied to how much you supersample above the native screen resolution. You'll have better contact visibility in the G2. Here is why: The 3080 can push many pixels, and you are more likely to supersample above the Rift S' native resolution than above the G2's native resolution. Hence the difference to the native resolution will be smaller on the G2, and it's less likely that pixels of distant aircraft get swallowed in subpixels of the native panel. So you'll have better contact visibility.

The aircrafts' silhouettes are definitely extremely easier to identify in the G2. Which also extends the range at which you can identify.

Thank you very much Fenris_Wolf for detailed answer. Very appreciated!

Well, because you are an expert for VR here Fenris, I would like to ask you next two questions:

1. How much distracting is a blurry image outside of the center of G2 display (I can see it on every "through lenses" vid on YT).

2. I would like to know your opinion about G2 Omnicept edition with eye tracking. Do you think it would be worth to wait for some commertial version of it (i.e. G2 with eye tracking but without biometrical sensors) or it is not very probable to happen in a forseable future?

Just upgraded from my Odyssey+ to the G2 and it is many, many times better. I had been running the O+ at 40-60 fps on high with my 8700k and 2070 Super, but now I'm getting 50-70 fps on the same settings with a 3070 and the G2 but with an EXTREME upgrade in clarity. I can't stress the clarity part enough!

I recently came from 2070 Super/Rift S to 3080/G2 and it is a very clear difference. Easy to make out aircraft types. If you are on an AMD x5x0 chipset you could run into USB issues however (that can be worked around).

1. Not distracting. The Rift S features more blurriness. I believe, what created the sh'tstorm was mostly the overhype by MRTV. Expectations did not match reality. Also, if you have a very clear central picture, and draw the difference to the side of the lenses, the falloff appears more present. Even if the outer lens blurriness is actually lower than on other headsets, it gets more prominent because you need a baseline to compare to. I have also seen this phenomen in the Pimax 8KX. After a few hours you don't notice at all anymore (I'm using mostly 70%SS).

2. IL-2 does not support Eye-Tracking, nor will it ever before it gets rewritten into DX12. In fairness, not many games use advanced VR technologies. So even if there was a commercial version, it wouldn't help anyway.

Thank you very much to all fo you, guys.

Especially Fenris is very convincing ?

For my laptop, I have found the Rift S to be the clearest and fastest headset in IL-2. I have tried the RIft S, Quest 2, and Reverb G1. WMR is a pain in the ass and is very buggy. The Quest 2 does not work as well as the RIft S due to the nature of Oculus Link and the Rift S on its best settings with super sampling and aa without reprojection is a wonderful experience. I'm not sure your CPU is up to running the G2. Your GPU is top of the line though.

I would disagree with Fenris here based on my subjective testing of RiftS and G2.

As said, the G2 definition in the center is really awesome, but it is also awesome how quickly it degrades as you move your eyeballs towards the edges. So, you are "obliged" to turn your head (not your eyes) looking always to the best image clarity (the center)

This doesn´t happen in the RiftS. With the RiftS you lose much less clarity as you move your eyes to the edges.

But overall the G2 is superior to the RiftS and having a 3080 there is no doubt, you can go for it. Take into account that you upgrade from 3.7 Mpixels (RiftS) to 9.3 Mpixels (G1 or G2), so the gain in resolution is huge.

I am sure it is there however I really can not say I had a noticeable difference in image degradation toward the edges when I upgraded from

Rift S to Reverb G2.

Maybe I just don't examine some stuff as much as others.

I did find the G2 to be a nice step up in image quality over my Rift S for sure.

Rift S is retired now - at least I have not used since getting my G2 a few months ago.
