Bremspropeller Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 (edited) It was one of those slow evenings spent on youtube, when the good ole algorithm proposed this video to me: It was just over 3 minutes and I said "what the heck - you certainly won't die dumber..:", so I watched the recreation of a ship lost at sea with all hands. The mechanics of the sinking were very intriguing, but what really got me was the fact that it all happened pretty much as quickly as video-real-time. Dang: A vessel larger than Titanic - and twice as much displacement - gone to take it's final plunge in about two minutes! Scary, eerie, but also fascinating. Now the algorithm struck again and came up with this: Stellar Banner - a vessel almost 10% larger than Derbyshire - being scuttled (after her crew had been rescued). The mechanics of the sinking and the speed of things happening seem to be very similar. It doesn't matter how large your boat is, you're still just a toy floating on a vast ocean. Land may never be more than 7 miles away, but that'll be straight down. The rates at which large vessels are sinking or going amiss is downright scary. Edited February 18, 2021 by Bremspropeller 3

SIA_Target Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 (edited) That's pretty much how they figured the Edmund Fitzgerald went down, improperly dogged hatch in heavy weather. I've been on a couple of vessels that were taking on water, not a good feeling. Edited February 19, 2021 by TWC_Target
cardboard_killer Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 CK's rule #1 about traveling: Never get on a ferry in a 3rd world country Corollary: When it comes to ferries, all countries are 3rd world. 2 2
SIA_Target Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 I preferred the ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket over the little a/c of Cape Air. I once watched a DC 3 fly over the station with one prop feathered. I also had the thrill of having a P-51 buzz the town right where I was standing, how he got away with it is anyone's guess. So many pilots spending their pre-flight time in the airport bar out there, different times. Rather float than fly, I can swim. 1
