steam reason

What aspect of the games requires the use of steam?

Is it just for activation?

I just want to avoid any use of STEAM as I have had only one experience with them, and it was rather horrible.  I purchased a game on an actual cdrom in a walmart store.  The game disk just gave me the steam downloader crap.  When i tried to download it from STEAM... the download file was corrupt.. it would stop downloading at 80%.  Steam said "not our fault, we have no responsibility".

I ended up paying for a nice looking cd rom case.

On my very first day of activity on these forums, my first post was dealing with hydraulic systems in the Great Battles series and my second post was the following:

"Please, Team Fusion, withdraw "Cliffs of Dover" from Steam!!"

But for some reason, nobody will make this happens... I dunno why...

Withdrawing it from Steam is not a trivial task as Steam provides the foundation for a lot of things such as client download, copyright protection, game updates and server browsing. 777 and GB provide a standalone client but this is only possible as 777 run their own master servers which handle all of these things, something I dont think will ever be an option for TFS.

You may not like Steam for whatever reason but let's have this hypothetical scenario: TFS actually go the same route as 777 and run their own master servers. Then some day in the future TFS have to shut down for one reason or another. The master servers are shut down and you are effectively locked out of the game you paid for.

With Steam you will be able to play for as long as the platform exists without having to worry about being locked out.

What's wrong with steam? Seriously, it's 2021 and you have no games on steam?

I can understand you like Steam if you love video games and, on top of that, if you find that the Steam thing, as a platform for gaming, is a good idea... but in my case, please know that I'm not interested in video games as such. My interest goes to the reenactment of historical aerial combat only... and it just so happens that the gaming indusctry brings that possibility. Years ago, in the 1990s, I played "Blue Max", a board game...  for the same reason. Other than that, I don't play video games, I prefer board gams or roleplaying games. Going back to what we do here, you may say that flight sims are video games, but the more they tend towards seriousness, complexity and, let's put it taht way, "full realism", or "hardcore simulation", the more I love them. For me, the gaming aspect takes a back seat. "IL-2 1946" wasn't on Steam in the 2000s and I was very disappointed in 2011 when I learned that the second installment in the IL-2 series was forcing me to download one imposed software to... "play the game". ?

Moving away from Steam is not an option for TF at this point.

There are many, many advantages and the disadvantages for the user are minor.

To the original poster:

You have purchased the original "IL-2 STURMOVIK CLIFFS OF DOVER" game.

This game is obsolete and while it works, by purchasing it you get a free update to the BLITZ version.

So install the original game using the keycode provided with the CD.;

Then look below the installation on your Steam Library page and you will see the BLITZ version.

Install the BLITZ version and then uninstall the original CLIFFS OF DOVER.

Then please open your main game install folder, (usually on your C Drive) and then the 'manuals' folder.

Inside is the 'Getting Started and Troubleshooting Guide'... you will find instructions to getting the game up and running.

Steam can kick you out of its system any time it wants, and then how would you play the game you paid for?

I have no interest in playing it online, no interest in multiplayer. So care to explain how having it being forced to be run through steam is good?

I explained it above. You not being interested in multiplayer is not enough of a reason to take CloD off Steam.

You got burned once by some game you bought at Walmart, I get it.

Digital distribution is the norm these days, no matter if it's Steam, Origin, Epic Games Store or GoG Galaxy. If you want DRM free, no online strings attached software you better get a time machine and go back to the 90's.

yeah, i dont deal with STEAM.  I dont do ANY paid membership websites.

IL@ sturmovik MAY count as a paid membership sight, but its not required to run the game.

IL@ Sturmovik is the first video game i have purchased since

Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness

Clive Barkers The Undying

Alone in the Dark, the new nightmare

pocketshaver, with respect, I hate Steam too... but Steam is not a paid membership website. In my case, I never gave Steam a penny, and I'm using Cliffs of Dover for 10 years now (and, obviously, I paid Cliffs of Dover and the existing add-on once each). Please know that, in fact, not Steam but almost all video games in the present day work as if they were paid membership websites, whether they require a platform like Steam... or not. The "IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles" series is a paid membership video game and does not require the Steam gaming platform. The "IL-2 Sturmovik Dover series" is a paid membership game too... and it happens that it requires the Steam platform.

The three videogames you mentioned are 20 years old, they simply cannot be reckonned as valid examples...

Yes, the "CD" is just for this, a collection object.

The version of the game in the "CD" is old and have no use, why you don't even need open the "CD" package, just type the serial in STEAM, that automatically will do what is need, download and install the game and updates. A win win situation. ;)

BTW - You don't need launch the game from inside STEAM interface if don't want, but need keep STEAM running minimized.

I just want to be able to install a game, and play it.  OFFLINE if i want. you know, just unplug the ethernet cable and then start the game up.

Please tell us what games do you play that way in the present day.

You don't need to be connected to play IL2 Cliffs Of Dover.

You can play offline by launching Steam in offline mode and run the game (this works even if your ethernet cable is unplugged...)

You can - even with steam (it runs just fine in "offline mode"). You just can't utilize the in-house dynamic campaign engine without being able to connect to il2's servers (as it actually generates the missions there and sends to your computer - and that is an il2 thing, not a steam thing) -  static campaigns can be run fine, however. Also, you could use PWCG for dynamic campaigning to circumvent online connection too (as it doesn't need it, and it is also a better engine too, imho). --- this for il2 GBS

Edit: Oops, I replied to this from the activity thread thinking it was a steam misunderstanding, without realizing it is specifically CLOD (replied with reference to il-2 GBS) - my bad. The info is still useful though (but moderators feel free to remove if you wish)
