Could we please get some more info about the SP campaign? I've read through the latest development update but still don't really understand what to expect.

It doesn't seem to be a traditional "career campaign" where, for example, I enlist in a Sturmovik regiment and then fly a number of consecutive missions in each phase of the campaign. It sounds more like some kind of QMB setup with everal templates that portray the different phases of the battle.

As someone who really enjoys SP content I'd love to see a bit more information please.

As primarily single player player who's not really single I'd like some more infofrom devs, too. What the way I understand from dev's blog and Jason's furhter posts is...

Our goal is to tell the story of Battle of Stalingrad to as many players as we can. This approach along with restricted development period surely limits us in comprehensive recreation of smaller details. Thus it will not be a single player campaign about a pilot or a squadron. It will be about aircraft and war history.

[...] Let your imagination personalize your gaming experience. We're an unbiased story teller. You are pilots living virtual lives in the sim. [...]IL2:BOS campaign will tell you the story of Battle of Stalingrad from November 19th 1942 till February 2nd 1943. The whole period is split into operations (phases of the battle). Each phase has a realistic template on how ground troops and airfields were positioned. We did our best to be as precise as possible in this and all templates are based on historically correct data and real maps. We divided the battle into several key parts: Uranus, Little Saturn, Aerial Bridge, Winter Thunder and so on.

Meanwhile the player is not limited with anything and the playable character is impersonalized. Each player is going to have their own virtual life and singular, specific experience and emotions. You'll be free to pick any plane, any airfield and any mission that is available at that moment. And this unique experience of yours will build your personal campaign.

Missions are not connected with each other. There's sort of a "groundhog day" within each single phase. Time of a day, weather conditions (within a list of historically correct ones for each period) will vary every time you start the mission. And you play this or that phase as many times as you want. Several successfully completed missions open access to the next phase leaving the completed one available for reply at any time. This is akin to sand-box style gaming.

The minimum I read from this is: there will be squadrons and adherence to their historical deployment. Possibly the squadrons will remain on the same airfields for whole duration of a phase (which may makes sense, phases weren't that long?). Player chooses a squadron, runs a single mission (which, by the previous posts, is  server-generated and may not be unlike single career mission in RoF), then is free to play next mission with other squadron. Functionally, this sounds like creating new career in chosen sqadron, flying a single generated career mission, adding kills / flight time to your log and deleting the career. Not unlike what career mode does under the hood (creates one mission for your chosen squadron at chosen date after another, only it keeps the records instead of resetting everything between missions).  Playing all missions in the same chosen  squadron may be very career-like experience, except...

What we may get is  customisable mission date (for historical weather) or customisable weather. Or maybe all "days" will look identical and weather will be randomised.

What we're obviously will not get is ranks, promotions, decorations, rising to squadron or regiment command, named wingmen etc. But otherwise sandbox-style sounds close to career mode with roaming commission and no (?) exact dates. With bit of bookkeeping (to keep our exploits in each squadrons separate) we can make a career mode where BoS provides missions and we provide records.  Or maybe I'm optimistic or reading to much.

It sounds like there is a form of progression in that a phase must be completed prior to the next phase being available, but once completed, you can at any time go back and re fly the previously completed mission set.  I suppose you can choose a squadron and stick with it throughout the phases.  I'd be interested to know an approximate number of missions posted for each phase just to get an idea of the scope of choice here.  Perhaps someone within the community can come up with a template later, so we can enter our flight log data or automatically generate from the log. file. awarding merit/award per cyber life.  The whole goal of SP is to survive and work towards mission success, which as stated....with some imagination, we can design our own career campaigns.

I just hope we won't have to win missions or phases by completing certain tasks and just survival (not capture) will be sufficient to continue.

I'm hoping that once a mission is generated it can be completed if the server connection drops. I've lost progress in RoF due to completing a mission but not being able  to update the server. I also hope that completed missions and phases are available (stored on my computer) for replay as single, off-line missions.

Thank you, I'm looking forward to it. The sim's beautifully done so far, can't wait to see the rest!

Actually, unless the devs have said it and I didn't see it, they haven't said specifically that we won't have ranks and awards. Named wingmen you're probably right about.

I'm hopeful that ranks, awards, squadrons, etc. are all part of the experience but you sort of choose which mission to take next. I'd be ok with that. It sounds like it could be fun!

As mentioned above in the developers' diary, they have said there will be ranks and awards, but you would have to change squadrons or regiments to progress through the campaign according to which were historically present. Then the mission would be generated by the online server according to your selected aircraft type. Your progress would be tracked and scored according to selected difficulty levels.

Yes, unless the player is killed I hope the campaign will continue, as the "war goes on regardless of a single pilots performance."  If it were "sorry, fly this mission until you have successfully completed it" it would be too "arcade" and repetitious to bear.  I enjoy moving through time unless I am killed, succeeding sometimes and failing other times just like real pilots.  Gunther Rall was shot down 8 times but the war continued, and as he was not killed when he was shot down, so did he.

I stand corrected. If there will be separate ranks and awards for German/ Soviet progress in campaign, or even separate ranks for play in Fighter / bomber regiments, campaign will be even closer to career with roaming comission   .

Hey I'm new to this forum and have had a bit of a look around. Really interested in buying this game as I found Rise of Flight to be the best and most immersive combat sim since European Air War (at least in my opinion anyway).

Can you please confirm there is no single player career at present in the beta version?

What single player aspects are currently available?

Is it possible to use the HAT (POV) switch to free look as you could in Rise of Flight? This is one of the things I could not do in the setting in CloD and it really ruined the game for me since I don't have TrackIR and have no intention of getting it.

Cheers

Single-player campaign will be ready in late summer. Now you can play Quick Missions in the SP mode.

Also you can read about campaign here:

If for "free look" you mean move the (virtual) pilot POV with HAT to certain angle and leave in this position until move back - instead of the "plastered" SNAP and PAN with fixed angles of il-2'46/CloD - yes you can.

BTW - This is possible in CloD with JoyToKey or NewView.
