Tank Crew - Flickering Buildings

Recommended Posts

The severe flickering of the buildings, particularly when viewed through the binoculars or gunsight, is driving me crazy. When you get really close (100-200m) then the flickering stops, so it is probably tied to the LOD levels.

RTX 2070 Super at 3440 x 1440 using Nvidia Drivers 461.40 with default Win 10 display settings.

None of the available graphic settings in the game, (or through Nvidia Profile Inspector) appear to have any effect on this.

(The flickering buildings, even when nothing is moving, are easily visible in fullscreen mode.)

@MajorMagee, did you record the video from the track or from the mission? it will greatly simplify the question if you give more precise information.

I assume it was from the mission, as I captured it while in the game (Tank Crew - 4.505). What I was seeing in the game is what the video captured.

p.s.

I'm brand new to IL-2, so what's a track?

Here is a video that makes what's happening clearer. It has the look of a lack of Z Sorting precision that comes up with a different answer with the calculation of each frame. It stops when the game is paused (though the trees keep flickering some because they continue to move even when paused). The buildings in particular have interior structure that seems to bleed through the outer surfaces when viewed from a distance. When you get closer it eventually stops because the LOD resolution needed to keep the polys sorted properly is available.

I continue to try to track down a cause for this. I went back and tried 446.14 drivers from last year to see if it might be a newer driver issue, but the texture flickering remained the same. I then installed the latest 461.51 GTX hotfix drivers, instead of the RTX ones, to see if it was something related to my 2070 Super video card's ray tracing capability, but the issue remained the same.

It seems like someone else would have seen this before, as I've switched on/off just about every graphic control there is, both inside and outside Tank Crew, and it stays exactly the same almost like it's inherently part of the building models. Either that, or there is some hidden control I still haven't discovered that can switch it off.

I tried installing the recently updated 461.72 WHQL drivers from Nvidia, but it had no effect on the building flickering issue.

Now updated to the Nvidia 466.11 WHQL drivers, and installed the recent 4.601 game revision, but there's still no change in the flickering building issues.

Its now 3 months  later and no answer, so I guess we have to deal whit that as being not to solve.

Flying at the Arras map in VR you will notice the same flickering towns, so as it seems no solution for that; are there any specific adjustments that can reduce that flickering in VR.

I've tried everything I can think of to no effect.

Just a note to say that I was "upgraded" to Win 11 by MS yesterday, and it did not resolve this issue. Not that I expected something different to happen than updating Nvidia drivers, or getting our monthly game updates has over the last 9 months. As they say, hope springs eternal.

Still the same issue in 4.701.

I'm happy to report that I just installed the latest Nvidia 511.09 Studio Drivers and there are no longer flickering buildings in Tank Crew with version 4.702b.
