[80 years ago today] "• The Tupolev Tu-2 has its maiden flight. It is designed as a high speed bomber that can maneuver like a fighter, and is roughly comparable to the Ju-88. Introduction will be delayed due to abandonment of its AM-37 liquid-cooled engine so that Aleksandr Mikulin can concentrate resources on the Il-2’s AM-38. Andrei Tupolev will redesign the aircraft for the Shvetsov Ash-82 radial engine. More than 2,200 Tu-2s will see service beginning in March, 1942. Torpedo, photo-reconnaissance, and nightfighter versions will be built."
