SR-F_Winger Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Aye! 1080p is already double the pixesdensity. But they already stated that neither the display nor the resolution will remain the same for the endconsumer version. I am pretty vcertain that the endconsumer version will feature something like this: 2560x1600 ppiFull 6DOF And wider FOV compared to devkits. Virtual 109 I AM COMING!Cant wait!! IL2 BOS will be so frikkin awesome when played in VR! YAAAY Heck even on the screen it looks gorgeous! Winger
Ala13_Kike Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 What consumers may move that screen resolution? I think that it's impossible, in this moment, to have this resolution due to this question 1080p is enough, and there will be users who will have trouble moving in this screen resolution with this sistem...not an assertion, is what I think
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I can't wait. I not only plan to to use this with ROF and BOS but also on long commutes in the car.
DD_Crash Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 What about people who wear glasses? Can they get the full experience?
SR-F_Winger Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 What about people who wear glasses? Can they get the full experience? Yes, they have diffrent pairs of lenses for users of glasses.
royraiden Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Really nice.Have they stated a rough estimate of the final product's price?
JG4_Sputnik Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 The rumors are that they targeting it to be about 300$. But nothing's been confirmed yet.
JG27_Chivas Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 Really nice.Have they stated a rough estimate of the final product's price? The developer has stated that they hope to keep the price around three hundred dollars. That said it could easily change depending on a multitude of factors.
Panzerlang Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 What do you do when you need to use the keyboard?
DD_bongodriver Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 What do you do when you need to use the keyboard? there's loads of ways to overcome this problem, make every effort to assign the most important functions to a HOTAS device, have clickable pits, or have a GUI built into the display allowing the use of a virtual keyboard with mouse, all of which is feasible and likely if the tech is given positive support, maybe we can finally be rid of a keyboard altogether and make space on the desk.
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 S! Looks like I have to take a 2nd look on Oculus Rift if the product is shaping up like this :D
JG27_Chivas Posted June 20, 2013 Author Posted June 20, 2013 What do you do when you need to use the keyboard? I can see that being a problem for many simmers, but personally I don't want to see the keyboard or anything else in the room, that would just kill some of the immersion. I can type without looking at the keyboard, that said, I will have most everything programmed to my HOTAS ie joystick, throttle, and multi-lever/button hardware, which can easily be employed by feel.
crossfade Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 What do you do when you need to use the keyboard? Use the force Luke
Porsche Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 They need to support this. What a better what to create a true modern flight sim.
Revvin Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Good news and with Carmack involved as CTO now they have one of the brightest minds in the industry to help find solutions to any problems as the headset gets integrated into games.
kestrel79 Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Looking forward to the consumer version. I just bought a 3 screen setup but this looks like the future.
Revvin Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Its one reason why I've held off buying 3 screens and a new TrackIR, I have the feeling they may become obsolete
BlueHeron Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 They will become obsolete (in a couple of years), but in the meantime I'll be happy to enjoy my TrackIR 5!
JG27_Chivas Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 They will become obsolete (in a couple of years), but in the meantime I'll be happy to enjoy my TrackIR 5! I predict that Track IR will be obsolete after the Rift comes out, but don't throw away our TrackIR's right away as the Rift will be in such demand, it will be hard to procure one. http://live.wsj.com/video/virtual-reality-headset-coming-to-consumer-market/6548AA0D-CCE1-407E-9D80-855595BB2923.html#!6548AA0D-CCE1-407E-9D80-855595BB2923
PauloHirth Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 TrackIR4 was the best thing i buy in 2004, give me a lot fun, i hope Oculus Rift give me a new and superior sensation (+3D!).
=BKHZ=Furbs Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I dont think TrackIR will be obsolete within a year, 300 quid is still quite a bit of money and im sure OR will not be for everyone. TrackIR still has a fair few years left i would think.
5./JG54_Eman Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 That gadget it's awesome! I just think how the hell I will see the keyboard or any other interfaces while playing with that LOL
JG27_Chivas Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) I dont think TrackIR will be obsolete within a year, 300 quid is still quite a bit of money and im sure OR will not be for everyone. TrackIR still has a fair few years left i would think. I'm not saying people will stop using TrackIR, people will use it for years. TrackIR brought us unprecedented immersion to date, but it will be far over shadowed by the OR with lower latency TrackIR functionality,3D/ HFOV / HD monitor, and ten times the immersion, for 150 dollars more than the TrackIR. Not sure how that could be considered expensive. Anyway there are a lot of hurdles the prototypes have to cross, for all this to happen, but they've certainly have, and have hired some of the brightest minds in the industry, who are dedicated to this product. Which should render the TrackIR obsolete for most people, and simmers who can find their Hotas in the dark. Now where did my Hota's go, ohya, its in my hands. Edited August 17, 2013 by Chivas

I think that's what I also find so amazing about the OR that they are aiming for such a price point. Virtual reality headsets are not new but they have always been the reserve of universities and research labs and for those with extremely deep pockets. Oculus Rift will finally bring a virtual reality solution into the hands of gamers for a price that many would pay for a graphics card or a large monitor or triple monitor setup. For us flight sim fans we've all spent silly amounts of money on hardware over the years, a new CPU, graphics card or I bet most of our joysticks/throttles/rudder pedals cost more than $300 and you're right about the comparison to TrackIR. When you consider that the Oculus Rift is not going to cost a significant amount more then it becomes hugely tempting to spend just a bit more on something that will take the great immersion felt using a TrackIR to another level with Oculus Rift.
No.42_Wholehawg Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 My mom always told me I would go blind if I sat to close to the TV and now these guys come along and strap one to each of my eyeballs. My mom is gonna be pissed!! Seriously this can't be good if you play for hours at time. I think Ill pass on OR and stick to my trusty TiR5 thank you. I think this is going to be more of a gimick/fad sort of thing. I would never buy one of these things.
Matt Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 (edited) That's pretty much what they said about TVs, when they first came out . Edited August 19, 2013 by hq_Matt

But seriously...has any research been done to determine if these will cause / worsen / contribute to myopia?
AA_Engadin Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 But seriously...has any research been done to determine if these will cause / worsen / contribute to myopia? Last research has determined spending hours, working or whatever, in spaces lacking of natural light is what causes myopia in the end - just my case, programming computers in a basement in the 80's -, not the fact of sitting in front of a display. In that regard, I would use OR more extensively by night than during daylight. AA_Engadin.
kestrel79 Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I think the Rift is the future for sure, but I think it may take a few versions of it to get there as a must buy for me. I just got a 3 screen setup in March so I'm going to ride this out and enjoy it for as long as it lasts, then in a couple years down the road by the latest version of the Rift. What's exciting is it's only going to get lighter, sleeker, and more high res as time goes.
VeryOldMan Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 What about people who wear glasses? Can they get the full experience? Problem is if you SHOULD wear glasses but are too sttuborn to use. Currently if you have some level of astigmatism in one eyes, and not in the other you have stupid headaches using this. But if you use correct glasses it should not be an issue.

SplashFriday Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 And that's exactly why VR is no longer just a thought. The necessary technology to achieve such things has finally arrived. Not only that, but the fact that it all seems to be converging simultaneously is something I find to be quite astonishing; of course some sooner than others but nonetheless. The Occulus Rift solves the vision issue. TrackIR figured out the 6DOF problem. The Virtuix Omni resolved the case of movement in a stationary location. Creative Labs concluded the way of surround sound output. Game engines and hardware can now support open worlds and higher object volume. Bluetooth and the like removes the need to be tethered. Haptic suits and devices will provide force feedback tricking the brain to feel resistance and weight. I'm so excited. Ahh, I think my minds going to explode.

TP_Merlin Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) 1080p is not enough when it that close to your eyes.I agree, I tried out what was described to me as a prototype HD version at the Euro Gamers Expo in London last week on the only available flightsim 'War Thunder'. I explained to the support staff I use Track Ir, the reply was "what's that" You cannot use a keyboard as shown in the video below, I use a CH HOTAS but still need some controls mapped to the keyboard. I and others found it blurry and the track movement was not as fast a Track Ir (based on Track Ir 3 Pro use). Its got a long way to go before I would want to use this over a monitor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BUZaE52hAo I think the Rift is the future for sure, but I think it may take a few versions of it to get there as a must buy for me. Valisk61 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 4k Rift in the pipeline... http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/10/4k-oculus-rift-that-wont-make-you-sick-in-development/ Can't wait for that!! :D
JaMz Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Yes, cant wait for this to be what I hope it can.. What I mean is what others have said, its a long way away before that will replace my monitor that's for sure.. But when this is good enough to use for flight sims, clear fast response times when tracking etc this will be immense
