DD_Crash Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 I only play Great Battles, Elite Dangerous and DCS. From what I have read the main advantage of a 3080/3090 is ray tracing. as far as I know none of the games use this, so would a RX6900XT be a more sensible purchase? My CPU is a i7 8086K running 5Ghz and 32 GB of 3300mhz DDR4. I dont mind loosing a few fps as my 1080/Rift CV1 seems OK at 45fps to me. Would the RX6900TX beat the 3080?

Be aware, according to our benchmark thread there is a problem with the Radeon 6000 cards in IL2. They are running slower than the 5000-series. It's probably a bug, but might not get fixed any time soon (since the dev team can't get graphics cards just like the rest of us). That said, my testing on the jets simulator implies that 10GB VRAM is a problem in multiplayer, so the 16GB you get from the Radeon cards is a benefit there. The CV1 is really old now. Have you considered Rift S or Quest 2? (Not that I want to recommend the Oculus/Facebook ecosystem). The resolution bump from CV1 to Quest 2 is going to be pretty significant. You might get a better overall experience going to Quest 2 + 3070 instead of CV1 + 3080. (Depends if you have a hard budget limit or not).
DD_Crash Posted January 30, 2021 Author Posted January 30, 2021 I decided against a Radeon card and have pre ordered a 3090. I have no idea when it will come though, and I am still trying to find a place to order the G2. If the card turns up before I can locate a G2 then it looks like a Quest 2 for me.
354thFG_Drewm3i-VR Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) I would probably recommend Intel and Nvidia still because of single core performance and graphics driver optimization. I have had issues with AMD drivers in the past, especially in more niche obscure games like this one and DCS. Intel is also typically better optimized for gaming due to low latency and a single core performance, but this is changing because they cant get their newer processes correct. For example, I'm running an i7 laptop and rtx 2070 max with my rift s and it's a good experience on medium/high details. Edited February 3, 2021 by =AW=drewm3i-VR
