Indeed IL-2 exports only latitude and longitude coordinates, and Tacview uses this data to calculate telemetry data. So the telemetry data displayed in Tacview, for an IL-2 flight, is estimated. This applies to all editions of Tacview.

Latitude, longitude and altitude (both ASL and AGL) to be exact.

As for whether this is enough to give accurate G values, as Animal_Mother says above, the sample rate will affect this, but at the 200-millisecond sample rate which seems to be standard (for IL-2 GB at least), I don't think that would be a major concern for most purposes.  Other data TacView shows (e.g. IAS, AoA) are compromised by the lack of any data for wind speed and direction, but that isn't an issue when calculating G.

Hey Bee, I just found this out. I tried writing via email but nobody responded. Is there anyway to still get this or find when it is to be on sale again?

Hi Fang, sorry the summer sale is long gone but we will surely have another sale sometime in the not-too-distant future ?

Hi guys ;) little question, what is the red cube behind my plane ? and how to remove it ?

These are unidentified objects being exported by IL-2. It's already on our list to fix this in a coming update. ?

In spite of probably sounding completely idiotic, I have a question.  Pg 1 states you need your startup.cfg file to enable tackview recording to = 1.  As of now, I do not even have that:

[KEY = track_record]
    fx_sound = 2
    record_graphics_effect = 1
    record_ground_vehicles = 1
[END]

Is this a manual input of that line of code?

Posted

No such thing as a stupid question! Yes if that line is not there you must add it manually. ?

Hi there

Has anybody allready managed to implement the rheinland map into tacview?

The Rheinland map has been included in Tacview 1.8.1 beta: http://tacview.net/download/beta

However IL-2 is not yet exporting all the proper coordinates so you may see your aircraft flying over the black sea.

After Tacview got the nice elevationmap for Rheinland in 1.8.1 beta 4, I managed to get this working after successfully guessing the scale of the picture:

TacSrceen.thumb.jpg.2178daa9128316c2dfded552ccbdc5df.jpg

I made it semi-transparent because I like to see the heightmap colors too and the default map color is rather ugly IMO. Just put the PNG-file to \ProgramData\Tacview\Data\Terrain\Textures\ -folder. Coordinates and rest of the stuff seem to be in Tacview already.

NOTE: It only works in 1.8.1 Beta 4 version of Tacview.

Edit: removed the link as coordinates are now incorrect and image does not match any more

This is a brilliant idea Hanu!

The coordinates of Rheinland texture map has been adjusted in the Tacview 1.8.1 final build, which will be released this week.

I will try to make all IL-2 maps transparent like yours too, because it looks so nice :)

Hi Vyrtuoz! Glad you like it! The way I did it was just to make base ground color (d3d1c5 on Rheinland) transparent, and it happened to blend nicely with the elevation map. Or you can use mine if you like. I uploaded the the rest also I had made earlier. They are a bit bigger as 8-bit compression does not seem to work here. VelikieLuki map can be a few pixels off from bottom.

Only problem I see is with the Kuban map, as the overlapping DCS map tiles are this way visible. I had to remove those from the textures folder.

Is it possible to show multiplayer callsigns in the tacview labels above each aircraft?

Yes it is, if you left click an aircraft to select it and then right click on it you get advanced details - which includes the pilots name. You can then cut n paste the name into the pilot box and it shows on the screen. Images taken from a flight on the Wings of Liberty multiplayer server earlier this evening...

I really wish Tacview included some more of the tank, AAA and APC models. I've bought a few of them as .obj files from sites like turbosquid and added them to the database myself but it's quite expensive!

IL-2 exports the callsigns in the object name instead of in the pilot name. I am going to see if we can write a little addon for Tacview which to move it to the pilot name automatically for you.

We are adding new models on regular basis, but it takes (a lot of) time to make them clean and fast for display in Tacview. Is there any *specific* model you are particularly missing?

Vyrtuoz, I've recently reinstalled Tacview again, it's just too useful a tool to ignore it. Very helpful in many ways. Now I'm looking to analyse a few nonstationary things, so I wonder about the exact time stamp of things. I take it in Il-2 you're basically only getting x,y and z coordinates (longitude, latitude, altitude) plus orientation of the aircraft (pitch, roll, yaw). So, when I export the data into a csv file for further analysis, I'm getting the time stamp, the original coordinates and orientation. Also, I'm getting calculated properties.

Il-2 export sample rate is 5Hz?

Is speed calculated from the coordinates of the current position minus previous position divided by change of time? (v2 = (xyz2 - xyz1) / (t2-t1))?

To calculate angle of attack you take the same way to get the speed vector (current position minus previous position) and add to that the current pitch or do you use any mean value for pitch as well?

If I export at a lower than 5Hz frequency, do speed values/vectors get calculated from the original 5Hz coordinates or from the reduced sampling rate coordinates?

I'm asking because in a few tests I've run speed change and pitch change are quite large, so I'd like to take any differences in timing into account.

Finally a feature request: Allow y-Axis manual scaling or y-Axis zoom). I've got pitch -5 to 5° and it's getting scaled -20 to + 20.

Posted (edited)

I am not sure about the sampling rate of IL-2. If you open an ACMI file generated by IL-2 in a text editor and check the frame numbers (prefixed by #) you should be able to ascertain its sample rate (assuming it is the same for all of its objects).

You are correct, Tacview calculate the speed like in your formula. I believe that IL-2 only export latitude-longitude coordinates in its acmi files. Because its world is flat and not spherical, it means the speed calculated in such way will be inaccurate depending on the distortion of IL-2 maps compared to the real world assumed by Tacview. We could get better results if IL-2 would export “native” x,y,z coordinates, but I do not think it is doing that yet.

The AOA is roughly the angle between the aircraft orientation and the current velocity vector (on the longitudinal axis).

Tacview calculate telemetry with its own dt, which is independent from the sampling rate/export rate, and dependent on the variable measured. I believe the speed is calculated on over 1 sec. Because, the shorter the period, the more jitter you will get, which will give unusable results. AOA is calculated over a period of 1 second too.

Can you elaborate more about your suggestion, I am not sure to understand were this should take place? Do you have an example?

Hi everyone, I don't know if this is the place to post this but does anyone have any clue why my record function in IL2 doesn't work? I'd really like to use Tacview, and I can edit the config file just fine, but when I try to record in game, I hit LCtrl+R and the recording symbol just doesn't pop up and nothing records... I have checked my bindings and it is indeed bound to LCtrl+R.  I have even attempted changing to binding just to see if it was my keyboard, but it still doesn't record.

Hopefully someone can help.

I had a similar issue and it turned out I had no Tracks file in C:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\ so I had to create a Tracks file then try again to record my flights.

For use with IL-2,  the advantage of having Tacview Advanced would be that you could host online debriefings, enjoy strategic view (zoom out as far as you'd like) and view charts (although the accuracy of the charts would depend on the accuracy of data coming from IL-2).
