Tom25briklebritt Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) When playing IL2 on a 49" monitor, the screen distorts the game at the edges. Does this happen because IL2 does not support 32:9 @ 5120x1440 resolution? Is there any hope for supporting these ultra wide resolutions in future game updates? Or is this because of the FOV and zooming in cockpit solves the problems? Edited January 18, 2021 by Tom25briklebritt
Scott_Steiner Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 It has to do with the nature of the "camera" used in video games. Not a lot of people have the qualified experience to know what they are talking about on this subject.. but basically, a games point of view is not made to handle something so wide, and to make it not distort, the developer needs to add a multi-monitor option in the video settings. This will split the view out into two or three cameras and seam them up at the joints so it is not noticeable. So in this regard, now you have 4 or 6 very small distortions instead of 2 very large ones. Without such an option, typically, once you get to the level of about 2 monitors wide, the sides become greatly distorted with a wide field of view. You can run a more narrow field of view to negate the effect but this may not necessarily be the proper field of view for regular gameplay. The only games that I know that support this are almost all of the serious car racing simulators and DCS. Original Il-2 1946 had this option in the config.ini file but it only worked with 4:3 monitors, making it useless. I don't know why so many games neglect to add this feature, as wide screens and wider field of views are just becoming more and more prominent as time goes on.
