Flighter27 Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Hi guys, I am considering getting a VR goggle for the game, been doing some research on Oculus quest 2 and rift s, seems pretty similar to me, do you have any suggestions which one is better for IL2 (and potentially other VR games)? Thanks in advance!
=420=Syphen Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 i had much better results with my Rift S then my Quest 2 for IL-2 and DCS. (8700k @ 5ghz, 32gb ram, 1080Ti). My PC isn't powerful enough to send video over USB for Quest Link or Wireless Virtual desktop without some latency and video artifacts... Thus despite the higher resolution in the Quest screens, the Rift S was a sharper image. 1
TheSNAFU Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 (edited) I have Q2 and it has grown on me. At first I had trouble getting good clarity. This is my first experience with vr so I read a ton on graphic settings in Oculus and Steamvr and how to improve the Q2 visuals. I am currently limited by my 1080 gpu as I wait on a 3080 but I have it dialed in now and it runs surprisingly well using 90 hz and ASW. Considering the gpu it runs smooth in PWCG even during dogfights. The visuals are now darn good with sharp gauges. Il2 at Ultra with shadows and a few other thinks a bit lower. Overall I conclude the q2 is well worth the money and it is very reasonably priced. Higher resolution than the Rift S but to each their own. As a first timer I am hooked! Even took trackir off my headphones and monitor today lol. Edited January 17, 2021 by TheSNAFU 1

The Rift S is smoother and sharper with better tracking than the Quest 2 and Reverb G1 I tried (low framerates and bad tracking).

I also have a Reverb G2 and I've found it to be very good. At 50% resolution it still looks much better then the Rift S, tracks well (without factoring the controllers) and performs pretty much on par with the Rift S with the same config file.

What's your rig? And graphics settings?
blue_max Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 I have all of them (quest 1, quest 2, played around for a month with a rift S, and just received my Reverb G2 yesterday). I would definitely get the quest 2 over the rift S for the quality of the screen (sharpness, not black levels). But the rift S is more comfortable. I'm pretty happy with my G2 in theory, but I still have a relatively slow GPU (5700XT) which is clearly holding by G2 back, and all the faster GPUs are sold out, so... sigh.

I cant comment on the G2, but on the G1 I was getting a lot of motion smoothing/blurring that ruined the reportedly better image quality and also created ghosting and stuttering. On the Rift S, I am running with open composite in high quality mode and mostly hold 80 FPS on medium/high settings. I am running on a Razer Blade 15 laptop with a 6 core i7 amd rtx 2070 max q, which is slightly better than a desktop gtx 1070. Others with more powerful systems, may vary.
Wolf8312 Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 Why not go with Valve? Not only do I believe that they want to improve VR technology for the sake of the technology itself (and not just profit) without any strings attached (or not as many as facebook) but I also believe they are truly oriented towards gaming whereas with facebook I doubt that will be true for long. I think if you get a rift S or something now and end up loving VR it won't be long before you'll want to upgrade anyway. The best reason for me to have bought into the valve infrastructure though was because unlike with other headsets, once you have the base-stations not only can you buy Valve headsets in future but also many others (G2 etc). So in the end it kind of works out cheaper and with less hassle than it might originally appear. I could never have bought a full index kit for example, but because I had the original base stations I was able to get the index at about 400 english pounds. And, if I want to change to the G2 or something better that comes along at some point, because I have the base-stations, that will also be possible. Its a truly great tracking system and don't underestimate the benefits of such an open system. I also believe such a system is worth supporting while facebooks "sell at a loss but sell the customers data" isn't! But don't want to get too politcal! If you just want an entry level system to see what VR is all about then I think you'd be better off with the original vive, or looking to find some second hand base-stations online or something. Then when you inevitably wish to upgrade it will just be a case of choosing a new headset. But then again I'm a bit of a fanboy and anti-facebook so take my advice with a pinch of bitter salt!
blue_max Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 Oh really dislike facebook, but for the price, the quest 2 is hard to beat. And the software is just so much better than WMR or steam VR. I really also don't like the business ethics of Valve tbh, some weird ultra libertarian shit going on there. And the index was cool for the time, but I tried it out the other day and the resolution is just too low - for my taste - for flight sims. So for now I've settled on the G2, but it's certainly not perfect.
