open_sketchbook Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 So we're going to get career mode, and something that's on my mind is that skin files are huge, and the Germans (and to a lesser extent others) really liked painting their planes a whole lot of different colours. I'm not particularly enthused of the idea of just shooting down a handful of identical planes over and over again (or flying alongside a bunch of identical planes over and over) given that. Is there a way to get around that and bring some colour to the Flying Circus? I once worked on the dev team of a game where we had a special shader written for the player vehicles which used mask files and a multiply image processing function to 'paint' the vehicles in different colours. It was low overhead and could accept a variety of patterns, it just needed a base skin for the vehicle in light neutral tones, I made several dozen of these masks. I wonder if something like that would be possible for IL-2 Flying Circus? Make 2-3 masks per aircraft (say, solid colour, 2-tone, and pokadot, for instance), have a 'blank' skin and a colour picker, and the AI aircraft randomly pick colours out of swatches to populate it? If it saved the colour swatches alongside the names of AI pilots, we could even run into and recognize the same pilot multiple times, which would add a pretty cool angle to the career mode too. That blue and yellow Fokker D.VII that got away last mission shows back up and now you have to finish him off, you know? I'm sure the developers already have a roadmap and this is mostly me just thinking aloud about something that would be cool, but yeah. It would be nice!
