Hello All,

I am switching from a HP Reverb Pro to a HP Reverb G2 in the coming weeks. The plan is to give a squad buddy my Reverb Pro.

We need to build him a new rig.. doesn't need to be fancy... just work in VR.

What's a good i7 processor and MB to make this work for him? Doesn't need to be top of the line..

Any thoughts out there?

Im running a I7 10700k OC'd to 4.9.  Seems to handle things well with the G2.  Now my 3080 does OK unless im in a tank or heavy clouds.

Running 78 SteanVR ss.

MB is a Z490E Asus ROG Strix

I upgraded to a Core i5-10600k ($280). Base clock at 4.1, typically runs around 4.5 on my machine.

For the motherboard I went with the ASUS TUF Gaming Z490-PLUS (WiFi) because it gave my Bluetooth. Plenty of other good Z490 motherboards out there.

Note that an i7 isn't necessarily the best solution.

Ryzen 5000 series and 10th generation i5/i7/i9 are what you should consider if buying current products.

Any given unlocked K model from the 7700k to newer will work.  Hyperthreading not needed, water cooler is nice to have for higher clocks.  Latest Ryzen are beasts too if you can find one.

Good points Guys thx

We have tested the latest CPUs with IL-2 VR.

The best for monitor or VR are the 5600X, 5800X, 5900X or 5950X CPUs.

More here and here.

If you must have Intel, wait for the Rocket Lake parts. Rumors are the 11900k will be able as fast as Zen3 but cost a bit less, and may have better ram compatibility.

Im buying the same CPU and 490 based MOBO. With that chipset you can go to around 4.8 Ghz on stock voltage and I think its better the using unstable turbo. Which GPU ur using?

5600X runs, in Intel language, as fast as a latest gen Intel CPU at around 5.8GHz.

Don't get confused by numbers (it clocks to 4.8GHz but is that much better per clock cycle).

Hence I also recommend AMD. 5600X or 5800X, on a B550 or X570 board. MSI Tomahawks are very good boards, with quality components in virtually every bit.

Missed this earlier - I'm still stuck with a GTX 970 until a 3070 or 3070Ti or other ~$500 Nvidia board gets in stock.
