hiro Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 wow . . . the only intact Do-17 . . . it'd be amazing if they could get it to fly . . ., kickstarter anyone?
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 If thy want to fly it, they'll have to rebuild it from the ground up. Everything would have been damaged by rust.
JG4_Continuo Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 If thy want to fly it, they'll have to rebuild it from the ground up. Everything would have been damaged by rust. still they are at least planing to do that!
DD_Arthur Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 still they are at least planing to do that! Er...no. I think they're going to "conserve" it. It'll be stabilized to stop it rusting into nothing and put on display at the RAF museum, Hendon in "as found" condition. It'll never fly again. It's one thing to dig a Spitfire out of the sand on a French beach when a thriving Spitfire restoration industry already exists but a unique German bomber? No chance.

79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 Working in a museum myself, I find those wreaks that are actually displayed as such to make for visually exciting and informative exhibits. It would have been cool to have a Do 17 in flying condition, but as it is only one in the world, I'd rather have the wreak as a wreak.

TheBlackPenguin Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Just got this from the RAF museum's Facebook page: "our intention is to conserve the aircraft in its crashed state. It will eventually go on display opposite our Hawker Hurricane, which is currently located in our Battle of Britain Hall."
Panzerlang Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 (edited) I've rarely encountered a more pointless example of expensive recovery of a wreck. What they've dragged out of the sea is an unrecognizable and unrestorable piece of junk. Truly, the mind boggles. Edited June 17, 2013 by JG3-Langnasen
DD_bongodriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Wow!!.....given the flood of mass posting you have been making in the last hour or so with the same cynicism you sound like a real bundle of fun.
Panzerlang Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 (edited) Wow!!.....given the flood of mass posting you have been making in the last hour or so with the same cynicism you sound like a real bundle of fun. And given your propensity for responding the way you do to everything I've posted I'm not sure I'd want to spend much time in your company either. Over in this end of the woods we prefer gritty reality to rose-tinted BS. Edited June 17, 2013 by JG3-Langnasen
DD_bongodriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Everything you posted? really? you might want to revise the statement, maybe your BS isn't rose tinted but it's still BS.
Panzerlang Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Everything you posted? really? you might want to revise the statement, maybe your BS isn't rose tinted but it's still BS. "...given the flood of mass posting you have been making in the last hour or so..." Correct me if I'm wrong to think you were refering to all my posts. Then go take your bent spoon and have it sharpened.
DD_bongodriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Referring yes....responding?......no, keep trying....you might get it in the end.
Zak Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 JG3-Langnasen and bongodriver, just reminding you that this forum is not the best place for a fight.
DD_bongodriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I think only one of us is attempting a fight, that will be the one suggesting people do things with bent spoons.....whatever that means.
Panzerlang Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Looks like I was commenting about an airplane being a piece of junk and he was commenting about me and my comment. Open and shut case.
DD_bongodriver Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Looks like I was commenting on how your many posts made on several threads in a short space of time all had very dour undertones and were quite confrontational, case was never opened as the answer was so obvious.........now about that spoon.....

Ah...Ming. I knew I recognized that tone of dementia.

What they've dragged out of the sea is an unrecognizable and unrestorable piece of junk. Truly, the mind boggles. Wait three years once they've cleaned it off and stopped any further erosion before passing premature judgement, just because it won't be restored doesn't mean they won't make it more presentable without destroying it further.
ATAG_Slipstream Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 One mans junk is another mans treasure. As the only known surviving Do17 it is priceless.
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 S! What bothers me a lot is that Finnish Air Force had quite a few Do17's, Ju88's and others after WW2 but all of them were scrapped. Not a single one made it to the museums We have one Bristol Blenheim Mk.IV left of the bombers only. Those Do17Z were a gift from G???
