Significant performance increase in FPS on the G2 and while the in-cockpit difference is noticeable it's in no way detrimental to the experience. I'm not sure I can see any difference on other planes, they still look superb. Maybe 4K is mainly a 4K monitor thang?

Interesting I will give this a go.

I turn mine off to for VR

I have mine turned on in the Reverb G2.  It has the pixels to use the 4k textures so it makes sense.  I sacrifice anti aliasing to get the performance I need.  Looks great!

The use of 4K textures will benefit even a 480p monitor, since texture size and pixel count have little to do with each other.

The same naming has more to do with how gullible people fall for marketing gags, for monitors, it´s more accurate to talk about the resolution being 3840x2160,

whereas for textures, "4K" usually means 4096x4096. Since not even a "4K" monitor can display the entirety of a 4K texture on a 1:1 basis, why would resolution make any difference?

The use of "4K" textures simply increases the detail of textured surfaces, which will always benefit. In some cases "4K" can possible not be enough and still lack detail.

As an example, cockpit textures of BoS planes only use one single texture, but you won´t ever see the entirety of the cockpit on your screen anyway, even with "4K" textures.

In the end, texture size will increase the visual fidelity of the game, and if you do have the necessary GPU headroom and enough VRAM to use them, do it.

Must be so, my brother on a Rift says he can clearly see the difference. For me (G2), not so much.

Edit: where I *can* clearly see a difference is in text on fuselages. But that's never a concern in-flight.

I notice a big visual difference between 4K on and off looking at the landscape in VR.

Off just looks too cartoony for me, much prefer on as it looks very realistic, though that top accolade must go to MS2020 using the Bing data as that looks absolutely superb.

Ya but I'm not going to spoil myself with that. Out of sight out of mind. I need combat in my flight sims so if I try MS2020 it will just make it difficult to play the flight sims I have to play! If only they would add some combat functionality as I enjoy flying and learning to fly but it won't hold my attention long enough.

Odd not sure I understand why choosing 4k skins would change the image in landscape.

Is it definitely only 4k texture skins or is it all 4k textures ingame?

I have no idea one way or the other but definitely the landscape looks worse for me with 4k turned off.

Performance wise it also runs noticeably smoother in VR especially when I'm bandit chasing at low level.

Yeah good point, I guess I was thinking it was skins.

I thought I was the same; it there's no shooting I'm not interested, but damn MS2020 looks so fine in VR, the landscape detailing, the clouds; I've done a fair amount of RL flying and this in VR is pretty close. The only thing missing is the 'feedback' you get in real flight from inertia when you bank, dive etc.

Flying around somewhere like the Alps or the Lake District is just jaw dropping...?

You should try it yourself and see what you find with your setup as you have a good VR system...?

Yeah I am still working on mappings for my new throttle, also have a new VKB metal grip coming today I will have to get mapped as well.

Hope to get some good IL-2 time in here soon.

Today I did a couple of testing and in my case enabling 4K will loose only a few FPS.  If loosing eyecandy I would stay to 4k.

But if have a powerfull RTX3080 or 6800XT things could different as for my GTX1080 the benchmark test is more of a GPU stress-test.

I think that the ratio behind the fluidity of this sim is very hard to understand... I started a topic saying that I did not understand that because I notice a reduction in performance in the last update, so I lowered from high to mid, excluding features like 4k... but I still have some problems here and there, besides CPU and GPU were not overloaded.

However, some user reports that some features such as 4k skin or SSAO reduce stuttering, high AA are better than low and so on... so I put everything on ultra.

Never play better.

I still don't understand the graphic engine of this sim...
