Starting anew

Hi,

 

First time posting on this forum and I have some questions regarding the "new" IL-2.  I flew an older sim set up (JoyFlyer) for 12+ years with the original version of 1946.  All single player, no internet connection.  A very nice set-up and very immersive.  I have recently purchased a DOF sim platform and would like to use the newer 1946 software.  I'm considering buying the Steam version of 1946 but am totally unfamiliar with Steam.  I understand you can run Steam offline (after downloading and installing, of course)...is this true?  Also,  I'm looking into VR instead of screens but get some confusing info reviewing posts on this forum.  (I was using TrackIR with my previous set up and would be fine using it again but VR is intriguing to me).

 

I am an aircraft mechanic and pilot and have fabrication capability for screen mounts and cockpit set-ups.  A friend who works in IT is helping with computer advice (graphics card/RAM/processing speed, etc.) but any advice along either of those lines would be appreciated.
