Placement of bass shakers?

I have a pair of bass shakers to install under my simpit chair.

I wanted to canvass peoples' experiences before doing so.

Where do you recommend placing the shakers?

  1. left and right
  2. front and back
  3. under the seat and back rest?

I am not sure how discreet the effects are and how sensitive pilots are to placement.

Comments and advice?

Cheers,

Flying Colander

(Judging from my call sign, I might have to install both shakers on my six.)

If you're using SimShakerWings, main vibes are engine, guns, flaps, wheels and left-right roll (also pitching up and down but not so strong). I have no idea if SSW outputs signals positionally but if it does you have a choice of lateral or longitudinal vibes depending on your tastes. Personally I'd go for the one thing that can give a bit of variety, which is roll (vibes on one side per direction of roll), everything else is pretty much in the butt.

Thanks, Hetzer. I figured port and starboard might be the way to go. I thought to ask as my sim chair is really heavy and cramped underneath.

Left and right works well. SimShakerWings can be selected to Stereo audio output and you'll feel the appropriate side for landing gear, wing stall shudders, and hits on your aircraft.

I placed 2 smaller shakers for starboard and a larger shaker + amplifier for port side.

Left & right works fine,  I have a car seat mounted on top of a plywood box.  I mounted two 50-watt AuraSound transducers on the bottom side of the top panel of the box.  The vibrations made it through the wood and seat padding so that I can feel them while sitting in the seat.  Pictures attached.

Syphen and Bob100,

Thanks for your added comments and piccies. I have thumpers salvaged from a pair of Aura Interactors. They are bullet proof even after 30 years (unlike anything I end up flying). Right now each shaker runs off their original clunky amp pictured below. I'd like to run them off one amp like you Syphen.

I am trying to figure out your wiring. You have a 2 channel amp. Am I right to assume you are running the smaller ones in parallel? The wiring changes color when it passes under the support plate of your chair. What are the most important things I need to know about shopping for an amp? I see your amp is rated 20watts but what then is the amp capacity?

My chair build is much like yours, Bob. Except your set-up is tidy and not hemmed in by books, tools and unfinished projects.

Cheers,

As noted, my 2 transducers are 50 watts each, total 100 watts.  So my criteria was: 1) to make sure that I had enough excess power to get a true 100 watt output, i.e., amps usually put out less wattage that their advertised rating;  2)  I wanted stereo capability;  and 3) I wanted an amp that had an adjustable low-frequency response range that was especially designed for bass transducers.

These criteria led me to the Dayton Audio BSA200 "Bass Shaker Amplifier".  You can read about it at:
