Diamondaxe Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) Hi all, I was using a Reverb G1 with some difficulty in spotting. I bought an index to see if spotting would improve but I am having a few problems. 1. Aircraft flying quickly across my sight I'm seeing as slightly double. I had a similar problem using a GTX 1070 with the reverb. I am now using a 2070 and that fixed the problem with the reverb. Aircraft identification at close range is impossible when this happens. 2. Periodically I get a wave like a splash of water occurs across the lenses. This lasts a split second. 3. I'm getting a bit of screen door effect. Any thoughts? Dutch2 Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 Nr 2, Not water, but If It looks like a lighting flash, quick and very bright, then I can confirm that also on the O+, so I geuss that is a fault in the game, maybe an AA leftovers fault.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) Let me start with saying IL-2 is one of the most demanding titles you can play in VR, along with DCS. That said, based on this...: Direct and brute but honest as always: 1) That is motion reprojection. Your PC cannot handle the IL-2 settings you have selected. Turn IL-2 settings down to balanced. - Set Index to 80Hz in general, disable motion reprojection in SteamVR settings - video - per application settings - IL-2 sturmovik - Overclock your CPU if it's a 8700K, you want to aim for 4.9GHz. - Upgrade GPU to 3070 or 3080. 2) Do you have a decent power supply unit? You'll want 750W gold branded PSU like from Seasonic, or even 850W (you have a lot of periphery connected). It can also be a result of your GPU going through power throttling because the CPU boosts, or because it's not quick enough for the settings. 3) Screen door effect is still present slightly in the Index, but not very prominent. I assume you mean pixelation? You'd have to ramp up SteamVR's "Supersampling" for it, but it requires a more powerful graphicscard. If you want advice on what to upgrade, best ask on the forums here first. Name the budget , your system, that you play in VR (important, to not have pancake gamers give bad advice) and people will do their best to help you out to get the most bang for buck. Diamondaxe Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 Thanks for replies, Dutch---I'm having trouble figuring out what nr 2 means. This water effect did not occur with reverb g1. Fenris 1- will try this right away and report back. Just bought 2070...hate to upgrade again...oof it was expensive but my old 1070 was giving me problems...oddly it still worked even though it was so much under recommended specs. 2I have 850-950 w gold i think....corsair made PSW. 3 it definitely looks like looking through a screen door but only when looking out my front cockpit window (tested only on p38 so far). by the way. I have only a large 120mm fan in case plus large heatsink on cpu. Should I get water cooler or more fans before overclocking? Also motion reprojection....is there another name for it? Motion smoothing? I don't see the option.
Diamondaxe Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 update...changed to balance settings. The settings are now less than the settings I had for the G1 and still have double vision problem. Also spotting is I think slightly easier with index.....lower res maybe?
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 (edited) I have Deepcool 360 RGB V2, very happy with it. There are various variants, of two larger fans as well for example. I think it's what you want to OC your CPU. For the Index, I'd consider the 2080Super or 2080ti/3070 minimum. 3070s are available atm, around 600-650€ though. Certain they'll drop in January. Are you located in Europe? If so, check out Discord "PartAlert" by my friend RecursiveGecko, that thing grew exponentially. It's a bot checking inventory and giving an alert once your wanted part becomes available in Europe. Started with 20 guys, now almost 6000 xD. Please donate to RecursiveGecko there if you managed to snipe one, even if it's just 1€, it's free and he put a lot of time into it. You can get your gear for IL-2 in Europe this way much easier. Diamondaxe Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 Do you know how to find motion reprojection option in Steam VR?
Wolf8312 Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 One thing that will help with the SDE on the index is to try playing with the original VIVE for 4 years and then change back! Makes a huge difference!
Diamondaxe Posted January 1, 2021 Author Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) Wolf8312- I believe it. Unfortunately I think the reverb has ruined it for me. I had not screen door at all with it. Fenris- I was finally able to overclock. I did a simple one and OC's to 4.7 My computer overheats on stress test but the temps are fine in game. I'm still getting the blur/double vision effect when planes fly by quickly. I'm having trouble believing this is caused by a weak Graphics card because things worked fine with my Reverb on high settings and don't seem to work with Index on low settings. Also my card is a 2070 super....if that makes any difference. Oh also about the screen door...it is not blocky like pixelation but it looks just like a screen door....mostly around the reticle of the P38. Another update. I found motion smoothing option in Steam VR. I do not see IL-2 as an option there but I have disable smoothing as a general setting. Oh! By the by, I am in the USA. Two ways you can work with that in Steam VR. 1: Have IL-2 running, then go into your Steam VR settings menu. Now you will see IL-2 listed in there ( as long as it is running) and can make your selection. 2: Add IL-2 as a third party game to your Steam Library. Have a look through there and you will see where you can do this. You will also need to add it to Steam VR as well. Once done it will always be there even if game is not running.

You will be able to see your CPU and GPU frametimes while you are playing IL-2. So you wiill see if your GPU or CPU frametimes are above 12.5 miliseconds (1000ms/80Hz). 2) Don´t use MSAA or clouds. They load the GPU a lot. 3) Activate the fastest XMP profile of your RAM in the BIOS. It is just one-click, it is free and safe. 4) Run the benchmark, so we will be able to diagnose it better.
