Sidewinder FFB2 potential problem

Does anyone have a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick? I just got one second hand, and the movement of the stick is feeling pretty rough. I don't know how to describe it other than to say that I can feel the gears of the motors moving.

Is that normal or is something broken?

Will depend on the level of 'grinding' that you feel.

And that's the trouble here: I've been using FFB2 for years now, before that I had a Guillemot Force feed back stick.

That had rubber belts in it, no gears. It felt really smooth.

Switching to the MS FFB2, I did feel the gears and was not happy about it. Now, I think I got used to that... :)

Mine feels smooth when the power is off - no grinding. Me thinks if you feel/hear the gears when the power is off, then it may be a problem.

Can't think of anything else to add that might help you. Just try it, see if you can get used to it  ...

I can feel a bit of grinding just as you describe it. It's more noticable on one axis than on the other. Not sure if it has been like this from the beginning, but by now it's certainly been there for more than 10 years. So nothing to be concerned about.

I use a MSFFB2 as well, and I know exactly the feeling you describe. I believe you are not feeling the gears themselves (as they are quite smooth when power is off, as a previous comment mentioned), but rather you are feeling fluctuations in motor torque as the the segments of the rotor and stator pass one another. I noticed that this feeling increased on my stick after I boosted the electric current to the motors by 2x, which would seem to support that theory.

Yep. It’s the motors, not the gears. And yes, it’s a normal property of the stick.

Not me, but...

A reset of the flight - you shouldn't have to leave the game - will cure it usually. Sometimes it take more than one try. There's also a small exe. file that fixes a few things with the FFB2 with x64 operating systems, like the FFB going dead with certain planes. There's a link to it somewhere on this site.

There's also, unless I'm having another flashback from all that mental promiscuity years ago, a file that lets to adjust the amount of FFB. That was a really big help with some of the planes where the stick just felt too light. You could bump it up and make the plane feel heavier. That files is here somewhere as well.
